A few rumours about Djed Spence. I’d be delighted with him as he can play LB and RB very well. Can also play further up the pitch if needed.
Jacquet is not seen in training at all so far…The only fit senior centreback is VVD. Gomez is a perma crock, Jacquet and Leoni hasn’t recovered yet, leaving only Mor Talla Ndiaye or Endo to be VVD’s partner at the opening month of the campaign…
I and others have said before, we needed a senior centre back even before Konate left. Now it’s urgent.
Yes, definitely. Who in here is starting to feel that the situation is becoming somewhat… itchy? I wonder if Hughes is doing a Parry here, and has taken his vacations during the summer period?
Joking of course, but still, given how light we are, the lack of any kind of results in terms of transfers since the club announced the signing of Muñoz (was it six weeks ago?) is concerning.
Also, the manner how we missed out on Guehi last summer should be a stern warning for the club officials to not let an uncertain situation drag out until the end of the transfer window. Missing out on Guehi left us very light at CB last season, even with Konaté at the club. Now, it’s unthinkable to start the season with nobody brought in.
No idea if it’s true but there were stories that specifically named Hughes as the one leading a proposed deal for Luis Diaz to move to Al-Hilal last month with David Woodfine (his assistant) running things at Liverpool.
Suppose it’s possible he is seeing out the remainder of his notice period/contract on gardening leave with a new job already agreed. That might actually be better than the more likely reality that he just isn’t very good at signing players unless there is a nice straightforward release clause ![]()
I think the most likely scenario by far that explains our sluggishness is that Iraola has asked to hold off anything until he’s had a chance to look at the squad properly.
That would be ludicrous!! Anyone can see we need a top centre back a right back a defensive midfielder and a winger as a minimum.
Iraola went already on record in one of his first media conferences as LFC manager, stating that we are very light in defence and need to bring in players. The message was as clear as it gets. But apparently, there is nobody around upstairs to take his words seriously.
That would be an absolute shocker. I won’t believe this as long as there aren’t any proofs around, or at least, claims from people at or very near to the club.
Iraola must be wondering what the hell he’s walked into. I know the window is open for a while, but we play our first league game in a couple of weeks and we barely have a defence. It’s ridiculous!!!
I would love for Iraola to get at least ONE veteran defender to reinforce the ranks, in particular a player with the flexibility to play both RB and CB when needed. He even mentioned how thin we were in defence at a recent press conference.
However it feels like FSG do not want to invest in the defence at the moment but instead will focus on pouring their money into wingers. Although Barcola and Mbaye would be exciting additions, I fear for our lack of depth in the back four. FSG is counting on Gomez, Jacquet, Leoni, and Bradley to come back healthy but that feels like quite the gamble.
Bradley and esspecially Gomez are always fucking injured. Good players when fit, Gomez could have been a Liverpool legend alongside VVD with his ability if not for injuries, but we are where we are. If we go into this season with our current defensive players we won’t even finish top 4 let alone compete for the title. Iraola is consideted an over acheiver in terms of developing players, but he isn’t a miracle worker. Honestly this squad is the worst we’ve had since Kenny took over from Hodgson.
Agree with the rest of your post but not this! Our squad currently has several key holes but the quality is (mostly) there. That team had no-one of the calibre of Flo, Alex or Virg. What makes it perplexing is we clearly spent big last summer on Alex for his ability to bring success now; not be part of a 3 year development project while we bring through a generation of youngsters.
You think this years squad is better than Brendan, Klopp, Slot squads then?
Ps. I said ‘since then’, not that squad was better.
A reminder that this was Klopp’s first ever starting 11.
Of these only Coutinho has a chance of starting for us today and maybe Skrtel and Milner get into a match day squad.
I might just be raging at the prospect of struggling to even finish 5th this season after being champions 12 months ago, thus not rembering past squads correctly. I also said ‘squad’ - not let’s compare 11 players from the squad. If everyone could stay fit - Gomez, Bradley for example would fill 2 massive holes in our squad and things would look better - but they simply can’t, esspecially Joe.
But I would be interested to look back at the previous squads to compare the quality in depth, albeit a subjective thing.
It’s already considered a successful season, or at least acceptable for us for a while. Now the manager got sacked for that. ![]()
Well the bench that day included Adam Bogdan, a well past his best Kolo Toure, Connor Randall (who?!), Joe Allen, Jordan Ibe and Jerome Sinclair.
I think Henderson, Firmino and Sturridge are missing from this so that’s a couple more contenders but it’s hardly a great squad and today’s is certainly better.
There was an era when we hoped outdated players like Joe Cole, Kolo Toure, Balotelli, Moses, and Sahin could strengthen us. We are much stronger and in a much higher position now.
Bogdan, fuck me I forgot about him. He really was shite! You might be right.
But our current squad has hardly any depth and we’re on course to have a really poor season if we don’t get on and make quality signings. We are miles away currently from winning the league. I just hope we’ll get 3 or 4 quality players in before the window closes.
