He’s Italian and we all know Italians and LFC don’t work out ever.
We should outbid Chelsea for Hato…if he hasn’t already signed
Fuck Hato , we’ll get a better CB backup. Get Guehi in the meantime and probably get someone from the championship as a standby seeing as Gomez’s fitness is unreliable.
We can look at a better hire next season if the championship defender isn’t upto scratch.
At this point , the championship players are more likely to be better than expensive backups from the Dutch league.
I edited your post for brevity.
It makes it even more mind boggling.
Liverpool, after signing major talents all over the pitch turn to the Championship for a central defender.
Stephen Caulker territory.
It’s someone we’ll need in the best case for some time in the domestic cups.
Don’t see why we have to spend so much for a second CB backup.
Guehi needs to come in. I’m talking about some other guy there.
There’s a half-decent CB at WBA. I think his name is Phillips. Maybe we should go for him!
If Guehi comes in why do we need another one?
The shouts for the Italian lad are to get him now before someone else does and let him go on loan somewhere to continue his development.
Buying a squad filler CB makes zero sense when we’ll likely need one, possibly two first team additions next season.
Some records are meant to be broken. Until Mane, we didn’t have players from Senegal who worked out either nor from Hungary before Szoboszlai.
Péter Gulácsi turned into a decent keeper and I still firmly believe this will be the breakthrough year for Krisztián Németh to lead the line with Danny Pacheco.
As for Senegal …
In the scenario we sign Guehi, do we start Konate and give Guehi the backup role and the cup games? Or do we rotate? Or do we start him and have Konate as the backup?
In which case (if Konate is backup), we can give up entirely on extending him (which is fine as well) but perhaps then we should then look to sell Konate now and still bring in that 2nd CB (Leoni perhaps) and let him acclimatize because again the numbers will be tight.
In a world cup season, I see a backup role being a problem for an established player like Guehi who is already PL-proven. It would be a great scenario to have Guehi in while letting Konate run down his contract… I just find the scenario unlikely.
The equivalent of Guehi (from a less competitive national team) might be more realistic if we are targeting established players who might serve as a backup.
If we sign Guehi (or another defender of that caliber), he should start as backup that is used when Virgil or Konate need a rest but be given the chance to prove that he should be a starter. Let him earn being a starter or not because Virgil and Konate are a very strong combo.
I’m still hoping Konate signs a new deal but selling him if we have decided he wants to go for free is easier said then done. He’ll know that if he waits to be a free agent, he’ll have a chance at PSG or Real next summer. That might not be true this summer for a fee.
Wouldn’t be selling Konate at all at this point.
On the one hand we have people moaning about not buying a CB, I think the club is well aware we are short.
And then this suggestion of selling another CB.
Agreed. I think if Ibou isn’t signing then there is an argument that (assuming Guehi is amenable) that we wait to sign him until next summer for free as a direct Konate replacement. That would mean we need to get someone else in this summer who is ready to play minutes.
Okay. Never seen Forfana. He looks fast but small. Anyone got insight?
Remember Bernard Diomede…
He’s nothing like him.
If we sign him…
Riera?
This time last year, no one on any LFC forum throughout the globe, could have predicted what a revelation Grav would be for us in the midfield holding role on our way to the PL title…
Who is to say, if Arne decides to play Grav this season as a CB, he won’t be an even bigger success than the way he was playing in the midfield…
Unlikely maybe, but stranger things have happened in football. Besides freeing up a midfield berth to accommodate our excess numbers in that area, If Grav proved an adequate stop-gap, it would take the immediate pressure off buying a CB this transfer window.
The word backup needs to be dropped a bit, I think.
We will probably sign a player in a similar situation to which Konate was when we bought him.
Add competition and obviously with Ibou’s experience and status, that new player might first start behind. Then, it could be a battle for proving themselves.
Plus what might happen with Ibou next summer and Virgil’s age must be a factor.
The likelyhood is that Gomez remains (we hope he’s as fit as possible) probably as 4th CB and we bring in a competitive option that would fight between 3rd and 2nd.
Almost surely won’t be a LCB because that is Virgil’s position and, no, I don’t believe we are changing his side at CB.
You hope…
Well anyone remembering watching Diomede in a match are slim.
Yep, it’s a tricky conundrum as to who would get the nod, Konate or Guehi. It is complicated further by Konate’s contract situation and the coming World Cup.
It feels too complicated, when I’d rather just live in a world that says Virg, Ibou, Mark, Joe - we will play the best pairing to win the game. We are Liverpool and there’s competition for the shirt in every position. We will rest and rotate as we see necessary, to achieve the maximum possible.
I get that that’s a little naive though!
