Both were injured at some point(s) and we also had to use different players there, like Szobo, Gomez and Jones. Pretty sure Slot would rather he didn’t have to change that much. He has more freedom to do so at LB, basically the only position in defence where so far this season he could go full meritocracy.
Doesn’t account for last season.
I was talking since Trent left, so this season. I didn’t realize you meant since Slot took over.
How about Livramento? Dude is homegrown (England international) and can play well on both wings.
why we have 2 full backs either side?
I think for obvious reasons it may be hard to deal with Newcastle for a couple of years.
In case Frimpong becomes a RW long-term, Robbo leaves and Bradley is cooked.
Frimpong will cover at full back when Connor is unavailable, we will get another player to go on the RW
We were close to bringing Gordon and brought Isak in the end. It was tough, but it was possible. One would say if things were going well (or better) at Newcastle, such moves would be much less possible. So yeah it’s not ideal, but there could be more players from their current crop leaving Newcastle before they become (questionable if and when) what they want to become… it could happen under a totally different generation of players and obviously coach.
It’s not a point about the general difficulties of dealing with Newcastle. I think we’ve poisoned the well with the Isak deal went down really badly with Newcastle fans and staff. From their perspective, I think the optics of them dealing with us would kill any deal.
Why? We got the player who was our first target all the time and they got the fee they ultimately agreed to. They were looking for a replacement. If there was any “poison”, from what we know, it was possibly more between Newcastle and Isak and vice versa. Isak was holding onto some sort of promise and they agreed to train separately. Who knows. That’s history now.
I don’t see why would they avoid doing business with us in the future after that deal if, as always, it suits both parties. That Jerry Springer stuff is more for fans’ imagination. It’s not like United and Liverpool not buying players from each other (even if I wouldn’t mind it at all).
The money aspect in the PL and certain rules created a situation that they are more willing to do business with each other. If it’s the right deal, I see more business as usual between us in the (near) future.
The fans would certainly go on the fucking warpath if we took another one of their players, and they will be wary of that.
Newcastle did a lot of briefing against us, accusing us of disrespect, unsettling the player etc. We got dragged into a bit of a circus, and I don’t know if the people in charge would want to walk into another one of those.
Fans are always unhappy when a big player leaves (though it quickly turns into a combination or rage and butthurtism, now there’s a new “God” in town in Woltemade), I don’t see that blocking clubs from doing business.
We bought 12 players from them in history, that’s not a lot. They might become more competitive and a rival side in the near future, but Liverpool buying players from Newcastle really isn’t something surprising.
The whole circus was between them and Newcastle being unable to get a replacement soon enough (we bought one of their targets, c’est la vie). From what we know Isak went on about the promise given, they agreed to train separately and I don’t know if behind the scenes we did some bad things when approaching the player.
Not the first, not the last. Some deals become more dramatic. There will be more business between us.
I think it’s a fair comment that it will be hard to deal with Newcastle for a while. I would never say never over any potential possibility, but I would want to be so sure about the player, above and beyond any other candidate, to enter the fray again (at least in the near term future).
For me, Livramento is a tidy player, but not so good that I would be willing to poke a hornet’s nest for him.
