Who would you buy? (Part 2)

We should be prepared to buy back Morton and take back Elliott this summer in case Adam Wharton rejects us for another club with CL spots.

Note: we are really really in short of homegrown players.

Doesn’t one or two of the youngsters become home grown from next season?

Or was that Bajectic?

At the risk of having another Dutchman, what do we think of Ernest Poku of Leverkusen?

Who?

Poku Man?

When it comes to midfield signings, @ILLOK has been vocal about us needing someone who’s a better passer of the ball than Gravenberch, for example, but with our lads getting frequently bullied there, yesterday’s performance from Anderson comes as a reminder that we should perhaps target someone who isn’t a stranger to winning a lot of duels and covering a lot of ground, while still being able to play football.

I’m still undecided about whether he’d be THE dream midfield signing for me but I already know I’m gonna go berserk and depressed at the same time if Man United sign him (The Athletic reported their firm interest months ago). Although he’s gonna cost as much as Rice, he’s still an inferior version of him but the more I see from him, the more I think he could be what our midfield needs at the moment.

Anderson was brilliant at Anfield too.

He passes the ball better than Ryan so no worries there, a clear upgrade. Will cost a fortune though.

Just a hypothetical, but would you rather sign Anderson for 100M or Wharton for 70M?

I’ve been watching both since our need is getting clearer, and while I’d be happy with either one, I slightly lean toward Wharton.

The point is well made that we need a bit of oomph in the middle, and they obviously need to be able to play well and pass well. Add a winger, maybe two, and maybe another central defender depending on outgoing, and the ingredients are all there for this team to regroup and kick on again after a difficult season.

Anderson.

Fair answer, he’s a good player! I wouldn’t be unhappy with him.

I have a nagging feeling that Mac Allister might be sold to help fund a few moves in the summer (midfielder, winger, defender). He is a smashing player but I’m coming round to the view that we need a bit more muscle in there, especially if Wirtz is going to be a fixture in the 10 role.

I’m not sure what sort of a fee we might get for Salah from the Saudis. In many ways they have us over a barrel, as the wages we are paying him far exceed the current output, and there won’t be too many takers who will want to pay him that much at this stage.

To pass the time:

Wharton/Anderson
Diomande
Jacquet (already signed)

Three good signings, arguably another winger in Allan, and another defender in Murillo, depending on who leaves.

Tbh I think we need new RB too. Bradley is broken, Frimpong is more RW backup than defender, and his fitness is terrible too.

I think you have to assume Frimpong has been a bit unlucky this season - his injury record was impeccable prior to this season.

I have a sneaky feeling that Trent might be on his way back with his tail between his legs this summer.

I don’t trust him in a 1-1 situation. He is too small, while the PL refs allow bullying most of the time.

Maybe is not a must like DM and winger, but its good to have.

I am really reluctant to conclude that a midfield that was very rarely outran or outworked over the previous 2 seasons now has physical problems that need to be fixed with new personnel

Oh, I saw the required ten games of his and I can’t recall him having a bad one. That said, he was absolutely brilliant in both Liverpool games - though the side he faced on both occasions was far from one that won the league last year.

The Athletic said Forest would ask for 100M pounds, though (I think Rice went for 105M?). I guess that bringing in one such player depends on whether the team can qualify for CL and whether Mac Allister and/or Jones are sold.

Are you inferring they got overworked instead, maybe outdone tactically? Could be, they all looked knackered at the tail end of last season. That said, Mac Allister looked a world beater this time last year and has had one of the worst seasons I’ve seen from a regularly playing Liverpool midfielder.

Now there are strong rumours of Jones considering his options with only a year left on his contract. I really hope he stays - as for Mac Allister, he looks like one of those players who can get to being world beater again but, to be overly simple, if you can get Anderson on Mac Allister’s wages + the difference of 20-30 million pounds in transfer fees, considering his homegrown status, would anyone here be against it?

Made his bed imo!

Easy. Anderson.

I think Wharton is overrated.

But both Manchester clubs want Anderson so he’ll end up being another Ā£100m buy for someone and I don’t think we’ll spend that.
