Donyell Malen who were loosely linked with us before he moved to Dortmund, is struggling to make an impact in Germany and has been criticized. This means a 12m bid from us this summer and he will come and crush all opponents.
I think the squad we have is capable of winning the league if we get lucky with injuries etc. Would I like another CF. Yes, but the wild card thrown into the mix is NewCastle. If they stay up, they are going to be in for everyone this summer and that will inflate prices. I can see us going for a bargain like Coutinho although his injury record probably means he is ruled out at this point. But, I’d be happy if we are able to just keep the squad we have together for another year or two.
Do you know what role you’d use him in? I’ve thought he may be too attack focused for our 8, although I’d personally be happy to see us flick to a 4231 which he’d clearly be great in based on this seasons numbers. Is he quick enough to play the wide forward role? Or able to play as a 9/false 9 for us? Guys like him Musiela, Szoboszlai and Reyna seem great in Germany but I’m not sure who out of them are realistic to hope for. I know Szoboszlai has a buy out clause and seems to be a mix of some Mane traits plus some Firmino traits plus some Coutinho traits so I could see him fitting in if we stay in 433 either LW or CF. We’ve got some history of successful deals with that clubs players when clauses are involved. Wirtz seems like an obvious pick up for Bayern for some reason. May be wrong.
Would anyone still consider a move for Saul? If his star diminished in his last season with AM, that star has totally disappeared now in Chelsea… Which means major discount time!
10mil,anyone? If anyone can revive a dead star, it’s Klopp. Although he might take more than 3 days.
Probably a no on Saul for me. I think our midfield has plenty of seasoned stars. The next evolution needs to be adding more of the sort of age profile as Jones and Elliott. If we do buy a player who might be regarded as the finished article (though Klopp and our coaches will improve anyone) I suspect they will be at the start of their peak years.
You never say never, but I’m not convinced by Saul for the Prem. Even if Chelsea would do business with us, and even if the fee was low, the wages would be high. It’s a no for me, Clive.
I wanted Saul in the summer, and I’d still love him as a 1:1 backup for Fab, which in my opinion our squad does not have a true like for like for Fab. All that said, I recognize the fact it would still be considered a luxury signing and unlikely.
Seems an odd move for him to Chelsea. He started in their Carabao Cup matches, in the league has only played twice. Started against Villa, substituted at half. Came on v Newcastle for 2 minutes.
Came on as a sub in their CL matches v Malmo and Juve.
EDIT: also recently turned 27, which by no means is ‘old’, but for the price/value/age context IMO there’s likely much better value available elsewhere.
Tuchel has deployed him as their holding mid, protecting their backline. Limited sample size (and different system) but that’s the job he’s doing for them.
