Who would you buy?

Why doesn’t Liverpool win it in 2025?

I know the owners are shit and won’t buy reinforcements but we still lead the lague. Hopefully the boys can maintain their strength despite not getting additions.

I’d rather Kerkez or Hato. Don’t think Liverpool will buy an attacking first fullback on the left when Trent is already a liability for defence on the right.

Kerkez in particular seems to show the energy and skill to be a great two way left back.

I wonder how we seem to lead the league?

A constant puzzle to me.

What a sad life to lead as a football “fan”, that when your team dominates another team that beat all the other supposed title challengers, the instant response is to come here and jerk off over one of their players not your own.

@vjcpatriot I think you’re better off “supporting” Chelsea, United, or City.

I didn’t say Liverpool don’t win the title in 2025. I said they win it in 2026.

Unlikely.

Big rebuild on the cards this summer as things stand.

If we don’t buy someone soon, we will go on a 15 match losing streak.

If we lose them, and no contracts have been signed yet, we will have three massive gaps to fill in the side. There are very few, if any, forwards in the world who give you what Salah provides. Virgil is still imperious, and a leader par excellence. Our defence would be much less stable without him. Trent has days like yesterday, but he’s also capable of great brilliance, as we all know.
We need a CB anyway, even if VVD stays, we need a LB to cover Robbo’s decline, we probably need depth at DM, unless we go with Endo again, and there’s the question of CF, where Jota is so fragile and Darwin is, well, Darwin.
That’s a major overhaul and winning the league directly after it would be a massive achievement. Not impossible, but, as I said, unlikely.

As things stand.

Winning the league is always a massive achievement, unless you’re supercharged cheats and/or backed by the media and refs.

So many people thought we would struggle this season, given Klopp’s departure, yet here we are, top of the league and leading the way in Europe. Credit must go to Slot for the job he has done so far; I very much doubt that he’s going to be a one-season wonder, as he appears far too focused and meticulous for that to be the case.

I agree but I think the point stands that winning again (if we win the league this season) will be even tougher.

It’s even more of a massive achievement after an overhaul that would mean bringing in five or six new players.

I’m not doubting Slot, and, hopefully 2027 will be different, but winning it next season, if we lose all three, is unlikely. I don’t see what’s so contentious about that.

That’s why it’s so important that we take the opportunity this season.

There is also noise about Diaz and Konate not signing new contracts, which might prompt more work on the squad rebuild as early as this summer…

On the plus side, while not exactly comparable, i think Arne’s spell at Feyernoord saw a lot of transfer activity and he was still able to deliver some consistemcy of results, adapting their patterns of play accordingly.

I wouldn’t have too many issues with Diaz leaving this summer if the price was right - I think he’s a good player but one who’s unlikely to get better. Meanwhile, Konate has injury issues but if he could play 30 league games per season at the level of 2024/25, I’d sign him up until he’s 34. I’d really hate it if he left because he’s developed nicely, speaks well and has that leader aura about him.

I do expect the club to have a busy summer, though. Some players should be in line for new contracts regardless of how many years they have left on their current contracts, like Gravenberch, Gakpo, Bradley even…

There will surely be activity, but I don’t expect too many changes.

As things stand (and for a while now) my feeling is that Virgil and Salah will stay and Trent will leave. But of course, as long as there are no announcements, we cannot know for sure. Maybe there will be some surprises.

We’ll have a clearer picture soon, hopefully the club already knows more or less what will happen, because now you already prepare the summer window. We don’t need to know.

I think in this situation we’ll be careful not to try and get rid of too many players, example: “let’s find a buyer for Nunez and also get rid of Jota because he’s not fit enough”.

So what, then, coupled with Chiesa’s questionable situation, we’d remain with a few forwards and that’s it? We’d end up needing to replace almost half the team, which isn’t going to happen.

This is not a game where by a few clicks we move a lot of pieces out/in, all down to our will. This is a very good team with almost ideal numbers. Obviously some players will leave and the rest will be down to our evaluation what can be done.

There’s also the eternal balance between wanting to sell, open for offers and what the market offers.

Saying that winning the league after a major rebuild is unlikely is not the same as saying that the sky is falling down.
There’s a big difference.
I’m confident that we will rebuild well and continue to be in the top four, but to think that we be unaffected by the personnel changes which seem likely this summer is unrealistic.

To be honest if we win it this season and decide that now is the time to rebuild I think that is fine. I can see the logic in letting this team finish their cycle with a big successful season and then waving goodbye to bring in some younger players and start over.

Obviously none of us know the plan but if we are planning a summer revolution then its as good a time as any.

I don’t see any reason why a major rebuild is required. Get the contracts sorted and bring a couple of young prospects in that can develop. Win the league again next year :+1:

Ok, I was talking about as things stand and as things stand the three contracts haven’t been signed. If they are, no major rebuild is needed, but, right now, they aren’t, and that means we will need replacements.

We still would need a rebuild even if Virgil and Mo sign on for another 2 years.

The main advantage is that we would have two more years of a stable leadership group to identify and build players. And the second phase of the rebuild happens in a more phased manner (considering that Klopp has actually completed the midfield rebuild)

Unless the demands of the duo are exhorbitant, I don’t see any reason why the club should refuse to get them an extension.
