I was at the match with a few players in my women’s team.
Massive crowd almost 75,000 and it was very noisy and exciting. I thought pre match Japan would cruise it as they play a really quick tidy close touch passing style and absolutely dusted Korea in the semi. What a great strike to take the lead and I though oh no this could be bad.
The last 20 saw the Aussies pile on the pressure and the crowd was going nuts for an equaliser. The crowd was female dominant and plenty of children and therefore screaming. Cover my ears. It’s not a Kop level of knowledge either.
And the all women tv panel are always to nice and never make the hard comments…need Roy Kent from Ted Lasso.
But a terrific night, great to to see the women’s game grow as the Matilda’s really do have a high profile in Australia.
That is interesting and a big part of the fight over pay in the US. The US women explicitly fought for more guaranteed pay from the US central contracts, which covered pregnancy absences. This sort of structure means it has to cover more people and at a lower amount than if it was based on pay per play rates. That was what their arguments about “if we were paid like the men we’d have made more” ignored.
