YNWA Diogo Jota 4/12/96 - 3/7/25

Arne Slot statement

What to say? What can anyone say at a time like this when the shock and the pain is so incredibly raw? I wish I had the words but I know I do not.

All I have are feelings that I know so many people will share about a person and a player we loved dearly and a family we care so much about.

My first thoughts are not those of a football manager. They are of a father, a son, a brother and an uncle and they belong to the family of Diogo and Andre Silva who have experienced such an unimaginable loss.

My message to them is very clear – you will never walk alone. The players, the staff, the supporters of Liverpool Football Club are all with you and from what I have seen today, the same can be said of the wider family of football.

This is not solely a response to tragedy. It is also a reaction to the goodness of the people involved and the respect that so many have for the boys as individuals and for the family as a whole.

For us as a club, the sense of shock is absolute. Diogo was not just our player. He was a loved one to all of us. He was a teammate, a colleague, a workmate and in all of those roles he was very special.

I could say so much about what he brought to our team but the truth is everyone who watched Diogo play could see it. Hard work, desire, commitment, great quality, goals. The essence of what a Liverpool player should be.

There were also the parts that not everyone got to see. The person who never sought popularity but found it anyway. Not a friend to two people, a friend to everyone. Someone who made others feel good about themselves just by being with them. A person who cared deeply for his family.

The last time we spoke, I congratulated Diogo on winning the Nations League and wished him luck for his forthcoming wedding. In many ways, it was a dream summer for Diogo and his family, which makes it all the more heartbreaking that it should end like this.

When I first came to the club, one of the first songs I got to know was the one that our fans sing for Diogo. I had not worked with him previously but I knew straight away that if the Liverpool supporters, who have seen so many great players over the years, had such a unique chant for Diogo, he must have special qualities.

That we have lost those qualities in such terrible circumstances is something we have not yet come to terms with. For this reason, we need everyone at the club to stand together and to be there for one another. We owe this to Diogo, to Andre Silva, to their wider family and to ourselves.

My condolences go to Diogo’s wife, Rute, their three beautiful children and to the parents of Diogo and Andre Silva.

When the time is right, we will celebrate Diogo Jota, we will remember his goals and we will sing his song. For the time being, we will remember him as a unique human being and mourn his loss. He will never be forgotten.

His name is Diogo.

As a player I will remember Diogo as our most clinical finisher for most parts of his Liverpool career.

Hope our players will pay tribute to him by celebrating goals with Diogos crocodile gesture.

Man this really hurts. I rarely post on the forums but I read all the time.

I’ve been in bits most the day thinking about his and Andre’s parents losing 2 sons. Diogo’s wife and children losing a husband and father. All of his teammates having to return to training without their teammate, friend. Not sold to another club, but gone, taken away in the blink of an eye.

I have to stop reading all the tributes as it just keeps setting me off again.

I don’t usually believe in retiring shirt numbers but I believe this is an exception and a way to tribute the number 20 to Jota’s memory and the incredible memories he has left on us all in that shirt. It puts it all into perspective when their has been so much discussion about if he should have been moved on or kept and that’s completely normal, but what we’d give to be able to have that discussion back instead of the one we find ourselves having today instead

YNWA to Diogo, Andre, their families and friends, teammates both current and former and all his fans that are feeling the devastating loss. Love to you all.

Hi, LCFC supporter here. I joined only to offer my condolences the the family of Diego Jota and the supporters that will feel his loss.
A decent man from what I saw of him. A standout player but above all a dad, a son and a husband.
RIP DJ and your brother.

I noticed that Robert Plant has added a message on Facebook. (He is a lifelong Wolves fan and their VP):

Evening Liverpool fans - Wolves fan here.

I felt compelled to drop in and leave a quick message. Not sure why. Gutted.

8-9 years ago this young kid arrived at Molineux on loan initially. We heard all the pundits laugh as they discussed our new Iberian identity struggling in the Championship.

They wouldn’t be physical enough against the likes of Millwall, apparently. They were wrong. Jota was as hard as nails.

We played Leicester in a final pre-season friendly - not the crap version of Leicester! Jota, Neves and a few others absolutely tore them apart.

That season he blew the Championship away with his tenacity. He seemed to get better and better and better. When we got promoted Premier League defences couldn’t live with him, and then European ones.

It all culminated in his finest moment as he bulldozed his way through United to score our 2nd in the QF of the FA Cup and on to Wembley. I’ve never heard a noise like it.

He meant so much to Wolves fans. A legend of the club.

I really hope we all come together in December, which I think is the month of his birthday, to give him a tribute across both sets of fans. I’m sure we’ll all sing his name way before then.

YNWA Diogo.

Thank you for coming here @njwolves, Diogo was huge legend at your club and was loved by both our clubs fans. We all are trying to come to terms with this tragedy together. Rivalries aside, we are ONE football family in times if grief and despair.
