YNWA Diogo Jota 4/12/96 - 3/7/25

Yeah i can understand your POV, i knew he was good at wolves , and thats the reason we brought him, watching that shows how wrong i was, he wasn’t good at Wolves , he was great all around and he brought those qualities to us…and he never changed his enthusiasm for the game.

Your club did him and your fans proud with that video, such a shame these had to be made , but sadly it has and now the world can see what a player means to the clubs he played for, great loss , but what a great legacy he leaves with positive memories for everyone who watched him.

Impeccably observed minute’s silence at the CWC before Bayern vs. PSG.

I would say retiring the number in a case like this is proper.

Baseball has it for their greats but we don’t generally do it in football and in a way I hope that stays. However with this situation the lad was stopped in his life in such tragic circumstances, having achieved so much.

I wouldn’t normally be for retiring numbers. Greats leave the club and retire and someone new comes along and takes up that jersey and all that might come with it but as you say this is different as it’s his current number.
Nobody is going to want to take his number at least not in the foreseeable future. Maybe someday someone might comes along who requests it in order to pay homage to Diogo, a fellow countryman perhaps. If that were to happen then the possibility of reintroducing the number could maybe happen but till then we should, as a mark of respect for him, retire the number.

Helped us winning #20 with the #20 on his back. I’d say retire the #20 for 20 years.

Still doesn’t feel real.

RIP Jots, our greatest finisher since Fowler.

Yes, I agree. To retire the number for a generation seems appropriate and fitting.

Heysel, Hillsborough, Parade on the waterfront incident and now DJ. Has so much happened to a club more than ours.

Shocked is the word I can only describe, forget Mo, Diogo was our most clinical finisher and suffered a lot with injury last year, felt sorry for him last season. Now sorry even more for him.

Condolences to his family and young children. LFC have done well with paying his contract to those he left behind.

I’d retire the shirt.

It does feel like there’s so much tragedy that follows this club, along with the joy and success

For many kids, it will be the first time they’ve had to learn to cope with such a tragic loss. Understanding that a loved one is simply no longer here and then having to continue living with the pain. This will be a difficult time for a lot of families and our youth academy, too. I send everyone a hug. :broken_heart:

I believe in the power of Anfield to get us through this.

The friendly vs Bilbao and the matchday 1 vs Bournemouth will be special.

Matchday 14 (at Anfield vs Sunderland) will be played in the first week of December. Hope that match will be scheduled on the Thursday which would be Diogos birthday.

Mourniho’s comments about Jota were very poignant. Hated Mou as an opponent, but I respect him as a man.

I hate how cynical a coach he is because he clearly understands what football can be at its best so how well said his comments were doesn’t surprise me
