Suspect there will be something. Rather than his number, i would prefer a small nod to him…his name somewhere. Similar to the subtle 97 on our shirts.

I wrote this poem after watching the funeral this morning. It’s all just so, so sad.

Diogo

Grass can cut. And comfort.

But ease feels far away today.

The dark churned earth is damp with weight,

Imbued with disbelief to be so turned,

And longing for the first new shoots.

It’s hard to see what’s not yet there, or was - now gone.

Potential is a thing that’s known, not seen.

And you were brimmed with it my friend,

The one I never met,

When you lived to grace the grass.

And more than simple comfort, joy

Is what you gifted to a sea of countless souls,

Your smile reflected back, twenty times over,

Twenty times again.

Then you were gone. And grief became a multiple of that.

Once you floated. A ballerina matador poet.

Once you rose. Grit and fire and skill defined.

So often you would finish. And what a fire that sparked, of

Adoration cauldroning in sound,

Shaking every witness-bearing blade.

Rest well, the friend I never met.

Rest easy with your brother as the sprigging buds pair you,

Forever with their greenness,

Under the warming sun,

Of Gondomar.

For far away, other friends you never knew,

But loved you still, will sing your name,

To a beautiful manicure of tended turf,

To a wall of red, in memorial to love.

And so you’ll never be forgotten, nor ever walk alone.

For your name is Diogo.

I can only but imagine.

Eventually, i hope they will be able to celebrate the lives of their sons (husband/father), even when the pain is still there. Itll be a long road.

My uncle (dads brother) died in a car accident at 22 years old in the early 70s. My grandparents (both passed now) always struggled. My grandma gave up on god. My dad still gets down about it now some 50 years later as they were inseparable. It entirely changed my dads life plans too.

Its fucking shit when people are taken away suddenly in your life, especially when they are so young. Ive experiencd it first hand when my cousin (my confidante) died at 27 years old from cancer. Life is fucking cruel. These sad moments make you realise you have to cherish the good moments…something Diogo himself said.

Was Diogo wearing the #20 at wolves too ?

It would really be fitting if that number was to be retired as well. For all that Jota meant to us, he meant the same to folks at Wolves (if not more).

#18

Just noticed Pep Lijnders

When most of the squad & staff stop and hug this one men outside the cementary i thought that man is Jota’s family. Then only i noticed it’s actually Pep Ljinders. So sad to watch

I’m still split on the number being retired. Not a fan usually.

But the situation with what it is probably means that no one will even take the number in future anyway.

And I do hope someone takes the #66 asap. It’s on a totally different tangent but Trent’s camp was wanting that number to be retired.

For me, its about the incumbent of the shirt at the club they are at and each individual situation.

The club will honour Diogo as they see fit. I think retiring the number would be fitting, or a memorial at Anfield as we have seen for others at the club. Both even.

Would be totally for a memorial to Diogo being built.

Singing in the #20th minute and other ways the Anfield crowd will honour Diogo.

Let’s just say I’m still split on the decision of retiring the number. As I’m traditionally not a fan. But I do seem to tend to the logic of it. The fact that he was an active player for us when he died etc etc.

Heartbreaking watching this. Proud of my club for delivering such a beautiful video of the legend.

Feel like we’ve all been robbed of a real good guy.
