David Moyes’ tribute to Diogo Jota in #EFC programme notes:
"I must say how shocked and saddened everybody around the club was at the tragic news of the passing of Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva.
"It was horrendous news but it not only brought the football world together, it brought the city of Liverpool together.
“Every Evertonian was as stunned as the Liverpool fans were at such distressing news. Our thoughts and prayers are with Diogo and Andre’s families, children and friends.”
A Crystal Palace fanzine has apologised and offered an explanation for the commotion during the moment of silence for Diogo Jota yesterday.
"A word on the Jota silence incident.
"A lot of our fans had difficulty getting into the ground. Stewarding was a mess. Some came into the concourse without realising what was going on.
"All we can do is apologise. It’s a disappointing thing to have happened and we’re sorry. We’ve had a good rapport with Liverpool fans over the years. We don’t do tragedy chanting, we care for our community. We have a lot in common as fans.
“We’re certain no one would have intentionally disrupted the moment of silence. Our thoughts are with Diogo, Andre and family.”
Much respect to Five Year Plan for this. It would have been easy to say nothing and move on so thank you. YNWA!
That was my impression as well. There were also some issue with the start of the silence too - The stadium announcement said it would start with the ref, who didn’t appear to have got the memo.
The biggest issue with situations like this is that when people make noise, the instinct others have is to pile in and tell them to shut up. But all that sounds like is more noise. So more people pile in to tell them to shut up, and it’s suddenly out of control.
An unexpectedly generous and touching gesture from the Chelsea players. There were certainly friendships with Diogo and Andre. While our club generously cares for Diogo’s family, now something is officially going to Andre’s as well. Very well done.
I get former teammates donating, but there are also many in the squad that would have not known Diogo bar playing against him in the Premier League, so for the whole squad to back the donating of part of their winnings is a big thing.
It’s also a lot of money and I hope the families agree that most/all of it goes to Andre’s family; Diogos family have two years of his wages (perhaps 10-15m pounds) plus ‘a fund for his kids education’ and should financially be very able to manage.
“Liverpool arranged a charter flight to take a group of players to Portugal the next day for the funeral. Milner was determined to be there even if it meant a five-hour drive from England’s south coast after training. In his attempt to make it to Merseyside, he ended up snarled in traffic on the M25, so he flew out from Luton instead. He is hugely grateful to Brighton, as well as to Liverpool, for allowing him to pay his respects.”
Absolute class of a human being and a football player, and my respect for Brighton just keeps growing.
