2026 FIFA World Cup qualification

So am I, and I first remember the 1974 finals.

I suspect it comes down to what TV coverage was like.

Everyone knows that Sky didn’t invent football until 1992

1994 was my first. I remember watching England fail so I pitch my interest in football around 1993. I remember Souness being shit.

My god, imagine this being one of your first footballing memories

How does someone become a fan after that?

I remember more Ray Houghton’s goal and Jackie Charlton moaning about a water break.

My Italian friends have no humour about it.

I had so much good memories about it. I do like tournaments over that side as a night owl. Shame the child has soured it.

I just learned that Bajraktarević, who to me looked like their most impressive player and looks to me that he has the potential to go even further in his career, was born and raised in the US. He plays from PSV now, but came up through the MLS system. As much as US football has benefited from the existence of immigrant communities who love the game, this sort of dual loyalty issue is likely to continue to hurt them as much as it benefits them

That’s not old! I’ve been watching since 1970

Its not so much the money, because while there’s not PL level money, there’s enough to be doing much better. Especially in the development of players and ensuring a pathway to the first team…

Its the absence of a sustained systemic infusion of new ideas and the long term thinking, and the commitment to see these through. Rather than see and accept the reality of the state of Italian football, they’ve tended to see this as only needing quick fixes.

Italy’s my favorite European team and its been a depressing experience watching them go through this process.

You look at the team that failed in the WCQs and you shake your head at the lack of real quality across the board…

Yet the youth teams have been excelling…

They play Turkey first (who are the strongest team in the group, imo) and likely will need to win against US or Paraguay. Certainly possible but equally I could see them finishing with 1 or 2 points.

We do have a huge Italian community in the Greater Toronto Area.

Me too. First real impression of football was that Brazil team.
Now I’m boycotting this circus.
How sad that is!
