ADRIÁN San Miguel del Castillo: 2020/21

I genuinely don’t understand this: You’re professional player. You’re no spring chicken anymore. You are very experienced but can and will make small mistakes here or there. Sure. Completely understandable. But by now you must know your weaknesses and strenghts. Why the f**k would you goof around with your weaknesses (with low passes) and not play sure shot football (send it long and simple) based on your strenghts especially on a very sensitive and demanding playing position? Lack of playing time, ego, coaching instructions, trying to emulate Alisson or just being a bit thick?

Yeah,he definitely is a bit thick, speaking as someone who knows a fair bit about being a bit thick.

I’d have to look at it again, but my recolection was his window for just booting it with his second touch was rapidly closing from the striker closing him down. He opened his body up as much to create an angle to get away from that striker as to try to be clever, and as Joe was there he may as well give him the ball. But then he fucked up that 5 yard pass anyway, not to mentioned Joe being in a shit position to receive a pass there anyway (facing his own goal).

So, sure, it was shit execution. But the bigger point is everyone has to hold their hands up at their failure to do better, and that includes Robbo for giving him a bouncing ball he reasonably had to take 2 touches with before deciding what he needed to do with it, and Virgil and Gomez for not responding to it and doing more to give him a decent passing option.

He was important part of the team that won the league last season. He’s not just sat on the bench and won the title. Not defending his performance in any way mind, but he was important in last season’s initial games.

Obviously Adrian cannot be blamed for all of the poor performances but I felt that the team had no confidence in him. This put that vital little doubt in every ones mind. Yes the back 4 were poor, especially on the right, but where was the mid field in front of them ? Keita looked completely lost and never marked or tracked an opponent and Fabinho was not much better. Gini was the best of them without being outstanding. Mo I thought played well with very little support but Bobby ´s poor form continued. Jota seems full of energy and will hopefully settle into the squad well. Minamino looks to me like a mid fielder rather than a striker . He battles well but achieves very little. We had to wait for Milner to come on to find a player who could and would compete with them physically and work to support others.
Personally I am sorry to see Grujic go as he looks more mobile than Fabinho and more competitive than Keita or Gini.
Hopefully Klopp will be able to shake things up and make these players believe in themselves again but it will be a hell of a job. The return of Hendo, Mane and Thiago should help though. We can but hope for the best
Credit must be given to Villa for some shrewd buys and a lot of hard work tactically.

Of course he cannot be blamed for everything. He was just a crap icing on a shitty cake.

What I meant was, this was not the first time he f****d up with costly low passes but he keeps on doing it. Allison did stupid mistakes as well to be honest. But the man learned from it. Adrian have not obviously.

Soooooo… lads… I remember Achertbergs bashing from TIA a couple of years back. We’re cool now? :grinning:

Yes sorry, but that’s it exactly… And it’s a big part of why Van Dijk is not captain material, world class, a huge personality but I never see that edge to his game where his first thought is others.

Van Dijk elevates others around him, but I think they need to be a certain level already.

Henderson elevates anyone.

You missed out YNWA at the end, are you sure you’re a proper fan?

Anyway, on Adrian - 21 games played, 33 conceded, 4 clean sheets, 5 errors leading directly to goal. 2nd worst save% in the league, doesn’t like the ball at his feet and can’t claim it in the air.

As he’s our second choice though that is obviously the best we can expect. Buckle up.

Always makes me quite frustrated when people take that line. We put up with years of Mignolet, Skrtel etc with the stance taken that we can’t get better in our position or who would want to join us…

Of course you can but not on deadline day

Adrian is out of contract at the end of the season. Surely he won’t be offered a new contract.

If he keeps performing like he did vs. Villa then we might be looking for replacement in January already.

But panic buying on deadline day is the last thing Klopp/Edwards would do.

Adrian will be monitored between now and January… If as expected we reach the the Champions League knock-out stages… then that really does bring a headache…
Can he really be trusted again in a match similar to the Athletico game when so much is riding on one costly error… which we all know he has in him…!
Don’t envy Jurgen with this choice he has to make…

Really? I think it will be one of the easiest of his managerial career.

Indeed, put Kelleher between the sticks, only in reaction time alone we improve immensely.

Kelleher is as far behind Alisson’s level as Adrian is so for me they’d be little difference, just stop back passing the bastard ball back to the GK until Alisson’s return.

Maybe…
But then the devil you know versus the devil you don’t…
Jurgen can’t sign a replacement until at least January… the first CL knock-out rounds begin on the 18th Feb… Like i said though… Does Jurgen stick or twist…?

Lets just hope Achterberg keeps Allison safe then everything else becomes irrelevant eh.!

He was crap , most of the team were too.

But with Ali out with a long time injury, Should have better

Adrian is definitely way off Alisson’s standard, I think that is clear. But what or who is better? We have seen names like Butland, Foster or Krul etc is better. Based on what? Based on because we have seen Adrian screwed up and these names have yet to screw up in our colors yet? Butland, who has been the most rumoured last week or so, have multiple compilations on his screw ups too. So what is better or who is better? Would another keeper who enabled us to lose 3-2 instead of 7-2 against Villa be considered better? We are probably underestimating the difficulty in having a quality back up keeper. Was Mignolet better than Adrian? I personally think so. Would you think Mignolet be pleased at his age to be backup to Alisson in the long term? I don’t think so.

As for our young keepers. I am bloody glad they are not thrown into the deep end. These young keepers will make similar mistakes to Adrian and can you imagine they make that mistake and get mauled like Adrian on social media. You can probably destroy his career and confidence. So yes Adrian is thick skinned yes, and that is because of his experience and despite the frustrations of his mistakes, you want a player who can come back, collect himself and try to come back better instead of wallowing in self pity.

Perhaps in this universe, there will be a great keeper who is just SLIGHTLY a drop off from Alisson and willingly sit on the bench for the whole season or two or three, I am sure there are but its not going to be the norm.

Do I hope we have a much better keeper on the bench? Yes I do. But I also hope that we will support Adrian to come back stronger not because we are blind but because that is what we do as long he is chosen to play by the manager and he is our player.

Tim Krul would be a good signing but he isn’t going jump ship To mostly be a number 2 and would probably cost.

I think Gazzaniga was the best bet of the rumours and to me he hardly done much wrong why Mourinho demoted him for Hart only Jose knows.

He’s not the best keeper in the world but he’s still miles better than baby t-rex armed Pickford imo.

Everton game.

There was an incident in this game where the ball went all the way back to our last defender who was running back to goal. Normally would be a simple pass to the goalie, but instead, no doubt under instructions, he turned and hoofed it out with possession lost. Expect much more of this in the coming games.

IMO we are overprotecting Adrian too much. If he needs this much moddycuddling then the goalkeeper spot is not for him.

With VvD seemingly out of action (how did PRICKford not get a red?), we need a more forceful keeper who can be trusted to come out for crosses. Instead we have one who will stay rooted to his line, so the defenders will be venturing into no man’s land at times trying to clear up.

I’m not asking for Adrian to turn into Ray Clemence and catch the ball. I’m talking about using his height and reach with the arms to punch the ball away. Command the 6 yard area at the very least.

That’s not to say that the defenders couldn’t have done better dealing with crosses today - they can and should. But this uneasiness with the keeper will seep through to all the players.
