It is quite funny.
When we had a vacancy at that level, we got an experienced old hand in Schmadtke to help out and signed Mac Allister, Szoboszlai, Gravenberch and Endo. Newcastle got in the Manager’s nephew.
Is there any wonder players are swerving them.

Yes, but there have been plenty of jokes about Schmadke here as far as I remember, but compared to these amateurs, Schmadke was a top-notch “temporary worker” tbf.

Yes, no clear vision for the “project” can be articulated by someone who has the experience and authority to commit to promises about how they will get there. Schmadke was only a temporary negotiator, but he was still implementing plans on what was a very clear vision he could sell with authority and conviction. Newcastle dont have that. And not just becaue Ashworth and then Mitchell left, but that they did during a period when the initial trajectory Newcastle imagined for themselves had to be reimagined and a different path forward created. What is the story now? How do you sell that to players?
Couple that with them seemingly not offering “this is beneath you but we’ll pay you to make up for it” wages and its a project that isnt as exciting as a lot of people assumed it would be

I think Newcastle’s biggest issue this summer is the lack of leadership and expertise behind the scenes. I don’t mind Howe and he’s a good football man. His perma-tanned sidekick is another matter.
But above them there’s nothing, so the Isak situation has bubbled over, and their recruitment has been dodgy as.
Mind you, I still think they will get a striker in, and I still think Isak will be our player soon enough.
Maybe Watkins is the way to go? Get a couple of years out of him while installing some expertise behind the scenes to plan it all out a bit better.
The question I’m wondering about is how committed are the Saudis? They could have done a new stadium, or revamped it, and new training facilities, without touching PSR. Are they wavering?

I don’t think Ollie Watkins is the worst signing as a stop gap, I agree on Howe, I am a bit disappointed he went there but look at Bournemouth you can’t disagree what he did to get them back from the brink was nothing short of a miracle.

I think the only problem with schmadke was that he was unable to have talks on contracts as it was clear he was a temporary hire.
But Trent probably have left regardless.
He’s been good. Dom , endo , macca , grav to complete the midfield rebuild.

Villa at this point will see sandcastle struggling and will not want to strengthen their rival even if they are in the FFP problems.
