The Athletic’s podcast this week was oddly supportive of Newcastle in this despite addressing the myriad issues of how they created this situation for themselves.

According to them, Newcastle openly spoke about their understanding this had to be a multiphase project because of PSR. They understood and accepted it would require several buy low sell high cycles and this was explicitly discussed internally and to journos when they landed Bruno. They then conducted a window that saw them spend more than any other side in the world, way above what the club itself could fund and so accelerated when the PSR limits would bite. They talk about both Isak (injury to Wilson) and Gordon (drama at everton) being moves they made that were accelerated relative to their financial situation, which they did with a nod that the refresh cycle with big sales had to come. But they didn’t do it and landed themselves in a deep PSR hole that threatened to undermine last season. They talk about Howe claiming last season was his biggest ever achievement because of how much discontent there was within the playing staff at the start of the season about the situation at large at the club and what a few key players thought it meant for their career trajectory. They cite Isak being one and then concede that it is acknowledged that by the end of the season Isak gave them a “I gave you that extra year, now I expect to be allowed to leave, as you promised when I signed.”

Yet Newcastle are the victims here and being screwed by a unreasonably want away player who ambushed them? There is just a really weird disconnect here between what people acknowledge they know and what the narrative is.

Yes they will - a humble apology and a goal makes everything better.

Not to mention all the talk of Liverpool leaving things late in the window despite making a bid at the start of August. Newcastle themselves are now making first time bids for players with a week left of the window, claiming that the player is to replace Wilson, and yet I’ve not seen one media outlet mention the timing of their bid and sticking up for Wolves who’d then potentially be left short.

The hypocrisy on the whole thing has been quite something to observe. Even when Shearer was directly asked what the difference was between Newcastle and Wissa and Liverpool and Isak he managed to completely swerve the question and just laid into Isak some more.

I dont know why I listen to it, but my algorithm presents me Simon Jordon on talksport quite a lot and there was one from this week where he spent a good 15 minutes really laying into Isak with what would otherwise be viewed as an unprofessional level of invective, other than it being talksport. And then in the final 2 mins he accepted Newcastle created the situation

I’m sure I read last season in the Athletic that Howe and Mitchell were at loggerheads early on over this as Howe was calling for them to move up the food chain in terms of quality/name of signings, and Mitchell didn’t think they were financially ready to. Might help explain why they went for the signings they did in the first half of the window, even though we must have had Ekitike committed to joining us quite early on.

Hoping for some news on this very soon. Maybe they sign Larson for 65M and then reluctantly do a deal with us for Isak, recognizing it’s for the best?

Then perhaps Wissa right at the end of the window for them?

When Mitchell’s exit was confirmed there was reporting from them about how there was some disagreement between the two early on. I didnt read anything that specified what the disagreements were, but it’s surely relevant that he came in at a time when the PSR restrictions were really closing in on them.

The relevance those stories though in their reporting was not related to this summer’s business, but to explain why he might have decided to leave. Their suggestion was Mitchell’s perspective won out, and did in large part because the guy who hired him was able to lay down the law that this was Mitchell’s domain and what he was hired to do. Under a new CEO there was room for Howe to restart the fight and it would be adjudicated by someone who didnt automatically have his back and he just coudlnt be arsed with it. But Mitchell has been largely uninvolved by all accounts in this year’s summer business.

There is zero chance Newcastle fans, the owners and Howe apologize to Isak.

It would be funnier if we didn’t actually need them to sign a striker…

We don’t.

Could’ve signed a Rodrygo/Barcola weeks ago, saved ourselves £50m and this wouldn’t still be a story. Needing Isak and wanting him are 2 different things.

If we wanted either of those we’d have made proper efforts to get one.
