I suspect his editor has asked him to tease a couple bits of fairly generic info to get us all excited and Joyce has said yes on the proviso he can caveat those names with “amongst others”. That way it’s essentially completely meaningless but it’ll keep us hanging on his every word now it looks like he’s confirmed Mac Allister.
Manchester United had also looked at Mac Allister, but the player’s preference to move to Liverpool forced Erik ten Hag to divert his attention elsewhere. [@_pauljoyce]
He is not a player that transforms a team on his own, but one who is smart, very technical and hard working. Somebody who should be able to play his part in a highly functioning team. Not the most ‘eye catching’ talent but a quality footballer nonetheless.
Other players on Jürgen Klopp’s list include Manu Koné, the 22-year-old Borussia Mönchengladbach midfielder, and Khéphren Thuram, who is also 22 and plays for Nice. Both have represented France at junior level and Thuram got his first senior cap this year. Celta’s Gabri Veiga, another rising talent, is also admired by Liverpool’s manager but no talks have taken place for the 21-year-old.
Same names being touted. Lets go! Can’t wait to start my new FIFA career mode.
He does about 5x follow ups on the same story then you get multiple posters sharing it all on here so really we’re seeing 10-15x as much content of his.
I suppose the question is if the get out clause really is as low as being reported by him, why would Brighton do that?
You can’t predict all these things. He’s had a massive jump in his career in a very short space of time. Not long ago, he wasn’t even in Brighton’s squad, team, Brighton as a team weren’t doing so well, he wasn’t even an international player, let alone a World Cup winner and a player getting to double figures in goals in arguably the most competitive league in the world.
So it is how it is. The player and price isolated, yeah, it’s a quality deal for us on paper. But by large, strategically, it’s also still quality by Brighton. Getting the service they got from him and earning 5x the financial amount.
They probably reached agreement on the new contract for Brighton to still get a serious fee, but not a too expensive clause. Also, probably both parties prefered it to be sealed relatively early in the window.
I think the important thing here is it’s not “us” that are talking about it, it’s journalists. It creates some intrigue and no doubt some conflict with Brighton fans unhappy and perhaps fans of other clubs wondering why they didn’t make a move if the fee is so much lower than perhaps the market value.
Al drives clicks, views and ad revenue. Plus it makes them look like they have inside knowledge without actually having to declare exactly what it is.
Nah, nothing wrong with it. In football the more bargain you get the more you get to pretend that your recruiting team is top notch to rival mates. Besides, Mac Allister is not yet a world class player yet. Two good seasons in the prem I think. Anything more than 55-60 would have felt like we overpaid.
