Alisson BECKER: 2023/24

Not only that, but the best keeper of all time in the PL. The only two for me who could be discussed in the same breath are Schmeichel and Cech pre helmet.

Whereas Schmeichel was always a helmet

To me, itā€™s a toss up who is the biggest cnut between a Father and Son hereā€¦

ā€˜Isnā€™t that greatā€™: Schmeichel criticises Alisson; mentions keeper rotation

Liverpool fans are aware that Alisson Becker is one of the best goalkeepers in the world but somehow, Peter Schmeichel has been a little critical of our stopper.

Speaking with The Times the former Manchester United man said: ā€œMost people consider Alisson to be one of the best in the world yet heā€™s first and foremost a goalkeeper.

ā€œHeā€™s very, very good at one-v-ones and excellent at controlling his box. He isnā€™t that great with his feet but itā€™s clear he has a manager who has got his back and wonā€™t drop him if he makes a mistake. Thatā€™s the difference between Arteta and Klopp.

ā€œItā€™s also clear Alisson suits Liverpool. If you want to press high and take risks by leaving one defender back you need a goalkeeper who can sweep behind and is brilliant at one-v-ones and thatā€™s him.ā€
Itā€™s clear that thereā€™s a lot of respect for the way in which the Brazilian plays for the Reds

However, thereā€™s never a question that at any given opportunity to play the former Roma ā€˜keeper ā€“ Jurgen Klopp will take it with both hands, as was shown against Crystal Palace.

Itā€™s a somewhat fair assessment from the former Denmark international but it does feel a little like itā€™s being said through gritted teeth, with a fair few dollops of sly criticism hidden inside.

We donā€™t need anyone to tell us how good the 31-year-old is though, he simply is the best in the world and weā€™re so lucky to have him between our sticks.

Who wrote that?

Story by Peter Kenny Jones,

So apart from the stops, the interceptions, the 1-vs-1s, the distribution, the organisation, the assists and the occasional goalā€¦

What has Alisson ever done for us?

I cannot stand Schmeichel, but that seems a bizarre spin on what he said. First and foremost, a goalkeeperā€¦yeah, well, he does wear that different colour shirt for a reason. ā€˜Not that greatā€™ with his feet (in the sense of playing the ball) is putting it somewhat strongly, but in Brazilian football circles that is the only characteristic on which people think Ederson is better than Alisson.

Notably, most goalkeeping coaches appear to think that Alissonā€™s footwork is much better than Edersonā€™s.

Yeah the footwork isnā€™t even close. I wonā€™t put Ederson in the Onana category but heā€™s not too far off. Average shot stopper caught out of position more times than not.

Alisson has the best footwork in the league and by some distance.

One of the best? For sure. At times the very best? Yeah, I think he had those spells. The best all the time while he was/is here? Not for me. Would I take him ahead of Ederson? I would. Is Ederson better on the ball? Yes he is, thatā€™s not difficult to see. Our saviour in a lot of games last season when he probably had more work to do than ever? Yes. But thatā€™s when we can also become less objective (and we donā€™t have to be).

Footwork is not the same as ability in possession. Footwork is referring to his ability to move his feet and be positioned well and balanced. Its a shot stopping skill, no one is close.

The original quote is ā€˜He isnā€™t that great with his feetā€™.

Iā€™d take that to mean with the ball at his feet rather than his footwork. Good footwork is a prequisite for shot stopping etc.
He has made a couple of mistakes when trying to play with his feet in all the time heā€™s been with us and the pundits never forget.

Itā€™s ridiculous as heā€™s the best goalkeeper weā€™ve had since Iā€™ve been watching Liverpool, and that includes Ray Clemence.

I get that Schmeichel was talking about ability in possession, I was continuing from Arminius and KY-TNRedā€™s comments on his footwork.

Schmeichel is underrating Alissonā€™s football ability but sure Ederson is generally consodered better in that aspect (although part of this is that his occassional fuck up appears to just get brushed away under the carpet) but bith are very good at it.

Footwork though is a different question and Alisson is by far the best in the Premier League in his ability to move in his goal, shut down angles, defend 1v1 situations, shot positioning etc that all stems from footwork.

I feel that most pundits have finally come round to it but Ederson might be an excellent footballer playing goal but heā€™s not a particularly excellent goalkeeper in terms of his own footwork, shot stopping and aerial command.

Yeah, understood, I was not referring to footwork (although itā€™s obviously also part of also the possession aspect, ball at feet).

The hardest part for any goalkeeper is commanding his box, shot stopping and one v ones and this seems to be what Schmeichel has said.

What I donā€™t understand is why he is having a go at Klopp for not dropping him as Arteta would do if he made a mistake, what Arteta wouldnā€™t do to have a goal the level of Ali.

For me Ali is the best Goalie I have seen, his positioning and presence is 2nd to none and for me he intimidates the opposition as they think, know, they have to be perfect to score. The best of all he does all this without a fuss and is humble to boot.

Where is that from? I canā€™t stand Schmeical, but thatā€™s a really weird take on his comments, and clearly manufactured for rage clicks.

He is criticising the tendency for keepers to judged on their ability with the ball at their feet. He is saying the stuff Alisson excels at is more important.

Mind you, I think Ali is excellent with the ball at his feet. Not at Edersonā€™s level, which is unreal, but heā€™s still pretty good.

Thatā€™s not having a go at Klopp, it is a snide shot at Arteta. When a goalkeeper says ā€œitā€™s clear he has a manager who has got his back and wonā€™t drop him if he makes a mistake.ā€, he is saying it with full knowledge that it is a position that demands more confidence than any other in the game. A keeper who thinks his next mistake costs him his shirt starts to collapse.

Thanks, I just couldnā€™t get my head around what he was insinuating and thought the opposite, which I couldnā€™t understand
