Have to say seeing 18 new posts I was about to cry
Jamie Carragher has picked Vicario over Alisson in his team of the year.
The spurs keeper who joined in June
And James Barton said women were stealing their jobs
In Jamieâs own words, Alisson is âthe best goalkeeper in the worldâ but Vicario has done well since he joined.
Pick the bones out of that.
If I was going choose someone behind Becker it would be Areola at WHU, though every time Iâve seen Spurs theyâve been conceding goals.
Sorry, for what position?
A vote out of pity perhaps? Ali is the only right and obvious choice, in the back of Carraâs mind he knows this, picking a team of the season halfway through is a harmless game, really is nothing to see here.
A better reason would be that Spurs have conceded 7 fewer goals than would be expected by xG, whereas Liverpool have only conceded 3 fewer.
Spurs have still conceded 11 more than us though, so he has a higher volume of shots to save in the first place.
Alisson has clearly been the best goalkeeper this season but at least mentioning xG would have been a better argument for Carra to make.
We are top of the league and Alisson has been our best and most important player.
Just mentioning he is Januaryâs player of the month on the calendar.
To settle this on Alisson I did some number crunching - basically thrown in all the most important GK stats and see what comes out (Iâve actually done it for every position but this si the GK list). Hereâs my list of best to worst goalkeeper in the league this season based on my equation (also they must have made more than 9 appearances to make the list). I think it comes out pretty fair.
In my rankings there are only two goalkeepers that graded out with a positive score (just a result of the way I score and does not imply that 18 of 20 goalkeepers are negatively affecting their team) - Alisson and Pope. The number itself doesnât really matter - but the difference between each players score does.
Player | GK |
---|---|
Alisson | 0.495 |
Nick Pope | 0.220 |
Alphonse Areola | -0.045 |
Guglielmo Vicario | -0.075 |
André Onana | -0.129 |
David Raya | -0.157 |
Ederson | -0.211 |
Emiliano MartĂnez | -0.249 |
Jordan Pickford | -0.356 |
José Så | -0.482 |
Neto | -0.571 |
Sam Johnstone | -0.631 |
Robert SĂĄnchez | -0.633 |
Bernd Leno | -0.707 |
Matt Turner | -0.814 |
Thomas Kaminski | -0.974 |
James Trafford | -1.079 |
Jason Steele | -1.247 |
Mark Flekken | -1.255 |
Wes Foderingham | -1.669 |
Alisson ranks as being absolutely miles ahead of the rest - which I do not think is unfair at all.
Worth mentioning Onana also as 5th might seem like a high ranking. Statistically he has actually conceded 2.9 goals fewer than expected based on chances created, so he is making saves, but then he is also throwing it in his own goal on easy chances.
Onana is some ways is the Nunez of goalkeepers - he actually does a lot of good things but then the easy things he messes up on and that gets highlighted more.
Anyway - long story short Alisson is the best and no one comes close. (Kelleher doesnât qualify for the list due to appearances but if he did he would rank between Leno and Turner).
Onanaâs worst games have been in Europe.
Yeah⊠no.
You donât think so, not even in the mix?
There isnât exactly a queue of players taking the league by storm right now is there.
We all know how it goes.
If City win the PL, it will be Halaand that picks up the awards at the end of the season. Poss Rodri due to his importance.
If we win the PL, it will be Mo (or maybe Trent at a push - they wonât give much to Virgil).
If we do lift silverware this year, esp the PL, Ali will be the GK of the year at various award ceremonies, but not POTY.
Iâd be very surprised to see a goalkeeper winning individual prizes like POTY or Balon dâOr. But Alisson is a strong shout.
I think a good way to look at it is even if they are the best in their position, how much better are than the next best one.
I always though Virgil should have won all the awards between 2018 and 2020 because it wasnât just that he was the best Centre Back (he still is) - itâs that there was an absolute gulf to whoever was second best.
There are two players in the world where they are the clear best in their position, and then a massive gap to the next one. The first is Rodri and the second is Alisson. And I think the biggest gap right now is from Alisson to number two.
Its not exactly crazy is it? The best players in the league this season have been Rodri, van Dijk and Alisson.
