Andy ROBERTSON: 2024/25

I know. It does it to me too.

I thought he was really good last night.

I think with Robbo, I would keep him around, but we need to invest in a first choice left back. Tsimikas would be moved on.

Yes he was

Played really well tonight and played one of the best passes of the game. Even in the first half, when we struggled to create much, he kept appearing in promising positions.

He did well. Plus he had his customary kicking the ball through the uprights. Hands up everyone who also just knew that was going to happen while he was swiveling into position?

I was fucking furious with him. My lad said ā€˜he’s entitled to take that’. No son, Marco Van Basten is entitled to take that, and he’s still probably missing it.

He had Diaz and Jota both free in the area.

One thing that Robbo could never do well was shoot.

I admire his confidence but hopefully the next guy we get has a better shot in him.

Tight angle, needing aq uick turn and a perfectly struck shot, right in Robbo’s wheel house … not

I had the same reaction to the shot lol wtf, you can’t hit the target when facing the goal lol.

Still love him though.

He saw Pickford go for and miss the ball on the initial cross so he thought if he swiveled and shot quick enough he would have an empty goal.

Unfortunately his execution was poor.

Bless him

Just read this report… but simple summation

I’m finding it hard watching the decline of one of our great stalwarts from the Klopp era.
Robbo has given us so many great moments, from his harrying the whole Man City defence to his pisstaking of Messi, he’s been a brilliant member of the team.
It certainly looks like age has caught up with him, and his recent performances have been well below par. It’s difficult to see him getting back to anything like his old level. I’m starting to think that maybe he should be the one to make way in the summer. It feels sacrilegious to say it, but it might be best for both him and the club.
What a bit of business we did there though.

He has been a favourite of mine for years but I do think he needs to understand something has to give.

At this point I wonder if it’s best to cash in here is Tsimikas is happy to play sub.

We need a new LB I think that’s probably our most needed signing this summer. VVD looked ropey recently but understandable with the games. Robertson has looked ropey since about October.

Something I felt he could be managed out of but it’s a major concern now. I don’t think he has the longevity of Milner sadly.

I had a feeling when Robbo’s drop comes, it will be sudden and drastic and not gradual. Like hitting a wall around the corner. He’s not a very rounded player, but one of the most consistent players we’ve had over the years and a brilliant character to have.

Lot of miles in those legs and also a slightly different role which doesn’t seem to suit him best.

Still, there weren’t many underperforming players this season so I think at times, he wasn’t as bad, but the focus on him was/is massive. I think he said it himself a few months ago, that he recovered some his form, but it was hard to hear him get credit for it.

He had numerous bad moments this season, but not all was that bad.

We’ll see what happens and who leaves. Let’s not forget that Moreno actually performed relatively well in the first part of 17/18 (after a full season behind Milner) until he got injured and then Robbo got and took his chance with both hands.

This time it might be that the new guy comes in and immediately proves he can start and make the difference. You just want high quality from whoever has the starting shirt, that’s all we should focus on.

Robbo’s contract is until 2026, Tsimi’s until 2027.

I even had a possibility in my head that we sell both Robbo and Tsimi (then get a natural LB and a player who can play LCB and LB), but with recent events I think that’s a no-go.

I’m not sure how much cashing in here is a factor as much as quality, experience, wages, motivation, etc. I guess moving on Tsimi and staying with Robbo until the end of his deal (at least, then assess again and see what’s best to do) seems like the most logical thing to do.

I thought that until the last couple of months, but now I think that letting Robbo go and keeping Tsimikas, who seems to be ok as an understudy, makes more sense. I reckon for Andy, having a couple of years as a starter at Celtic, for example, would be preferable to sitting on our bench and getting the occasional Carabau cup game.

That’s the position I’ve reached.

I want the better player first and foremost, that is very simple. Happiness comes second. I don’t think Robbo is someone who would moan or sulk if there is better competition and possibly someone who would overtake his starting shirt. Quite the contrary, knowing Robbo from the outside, I’d expect him to fight and try to prove himself again in any game or minute he gets. I don’t expect us to make much money for any of the two, you could say that Robbo’s top wages (I think he was the most paid LB a few years ago?) are a factor if we talk about the financial aspect of the decision. We also cannot know how much will our backup LB play or be needed next season before we see whether the new guy can even settle and do well from the start.

I’m not sure he’s the better player right now to be honest, and if he continues to decline, he won’t be next season either.

I don’t want to get into criticising him too much, as I love the guy, but that’s just how it looks to me.

Would be glad to be proven wrong.

At this very moment, I think I’d keep Tsimi in for Leicester. But it’s not a great difference. Overall, Robbo is the better player, that I have no doubt and why he still starts most games. I don’t mind Tsimi at all, he played his part for a good few years, but is he even a bit too comfortable just to be this happy court jester who plays 20-25 games a season? Both Robbo and Tsimi strike me as great to have in the changing room. I don’t think neither would be a problem if they’re backup next seson. But there is more than just happiness with your status, there’s experience, mentality, leadership, etc.
