Armchair Managers Thread (aka Tactics, Formations and others)

Salah gone, no real quality in wide areas anymore… Isak and Ekitike both wanting to play as CFs.

I’m ready

Or Gakpo could stand in for the Salah role?

From the Athletic article @Zoran posted in Mo’s thread

Mohamed Salah and Liverpool: Why the love affair ended – and what happens now - The Athletic

Part of the plan post-Salah is that Liverpool will have the option of playing a 4-2-2-2 formation with Alexander Isak and Ekitike paired together up front, with Wirtz and Dominik Szoboszlai operating in front of two deeper-lying midfielders.

This probably won’t be much of a surprise, and it is said to be an ‘option’ rather than our main set up but I wonder how this differs much from our games this season (have we been pairing Ekitike with someone else in place of Isak?).

Presumably, it means we would be in the market for another striker? There is already talk of us targeting two wingers…

Yeah, we all know of that option, but I’m not sure if even the main actors (some of who might not be there next season…) know already how it will pan out next season, let alone James Pearce.

And it remains a question whether that would be the right combination to both get back competing at the highest level and win also.

I’m not sure if the 4-2-2-2 is our plan next season, if we would feel the need to have 3-4 strikers, which would mean buying at least one more. And that’s difficult to see us doing (and I’m not sure whether someone like Danns is of the right level of quality/talent for us).

An alternative to that could be playing with a 4-2-2-2 with 2 classic strikers and a 4-box-2, but with false #9’s and 2 wingers.

There simply isn’t a clear answer right now and we’ll just have to wait first of all who are the key people in charge of football matters and how we build a functional 11 that can return next season competing at a higher level.

I do have my doubts as it’s been tried for about 30 minutes hasn’t it? And Salah was away for a month.

I do think that the club will utilise some of what it has so don’t expect 3 wingers to arrive.

I just want to see decent spine. We had one under Klopp.but with Slot it seems to have developed osteoarthritis. Ali still good but our two central defenders and the defensive midfield are weak. Admittedly this feels a little hard on Grav, who was mustard last season Sobz is great as the forward midfielder (wasted at RB). Until we rectify this situation I fear that we will struggle. Both Van Dyke and Konate need replacing, sooner rather than later. Once you have a decent spine in place you can start to flesh out the other positions. Need to keep Wirtz Ekitike and Sobz. BUT, the players we get need to be able to deal with PL and CL. Our current crop seems better suited to CL.
