Arne Slot - Head Coach (Part 1)

It’s not a dilemma for me. Slot has been measured and has been found wanting. There is no point in persisting with him, unless the goal is to see how much further back we can drop.

Even if Alonso is out of the picture, there is a slew of promising options, starting from a similar to Slot appointment like Stuttgart’s Hoeness, to a big profile name like Luis Enrique, who might be open to the possibility.

Either way, there’s absolutely no sense in continuing with Slot.

Joyce said this specifically as well which mentions his back three set up and likens him to Amorim

"They would, of course, have studied Xabi Alonso during his time at Bayer Leverkusen, and he knows the club having spent five years on Merseyside as a player. The external expectation is that the Spaniard, who is out of work after his sacking by Real Madrid in January, would be next in line for the managerial role, but there is little to suggest that aligns with internal thinking.

“Alonso favours a back three, for example, which is one of the reasons why Liverpool did not pursue Ruben Amorim when pressing ahead with Klopp’s successor."

Unlike Amorim, he used the tools (heh, heh) at his disposal correctly and played a back four at Madrid.

To be fair that’s probably a good point on Rodgers/Klopp.
I really do feel though that we need to brace ourselves for Slot being here next season, Esspecially if we scrape nto CL, as we now expect to.

The more I think about the Hughes-Edwards situation the more I’m inclined to agree with you

This thread is becoming more and more depressing with each passing day. (IMHO )

But he also used a back four at Sociedad, Bayer and Madrid, so he clearly isn’t wedded to a back three which was an issue with Amorim, so I find it odd that this keeps being brought up. Furthermore, its not as if our current squad couldn’t adapt to a 3 at the back.

He also has managerial experience in two big leagues.

Yeah, that’s an argument I’ve difficulty with. He’s a young coach, and has proven tactical flexibility already. There is no reason to think that he wouldn’t adapt his ways to what he finds at the club.

The question is rather whether he himself sees Liverpool as his next destination right now. The question of the uncertainty regarding the DoF and CEO roles is a valid one. I can’t believe that the club owners have allowed us to run into that situation by the way… this should be resolved one way or another since long. Talk about shooting oneself in the knee…

Also, he has maybe other plans for himself and his family at this stage of his life, who knows?

That analysis sounds exactly the same as the analysis that was put out around the time Slot’s appointment so the question is what is new news?

The one alarming issue is going into a season with your whole first team set up with 12 months left.

I do think qualifying for the CL does buy Slot some time financially the club will be fine with that and Q Finals in the CL is also probably the expectation they expected.

If I had seen some green shoots I’d be more open to it but bar one every 4-5 weeks we see the same performances.

I won’t hold my criticism for 2-3 months if we see the same thing in the new season, if performances improve but results are bog standard then I’ll hold my tongue.

Though Henry, Werner and Hogan will be the ones who decide whether it’s time to seek someone new.

The last time we sacked a manager in October, things turned out pretty alright. :crossed_fingers:

I kind of suspected that we were planning on a back 3 with our Frimpong and Kerkez signings, so I wouldn’t have been surprised if Xabi went that route here. But I agree that he’s shown tactical flexibility.

I just hope this isn’t a matter of bruised egos that he turned us down in 2024.

Has Xabi even been credibly linked with anyone other than our job?

Bayern were the other team he was reported to have had an exit clause in his leverkusen contract covering and that might come open sooner than expected. There are suggestions Kompany is making himself one of the favourites to take over at City when Pep leaves, and still some suggestions that might happen this summer. Does that meet the bar for credible though? Not sure.

Yeah, I’ve heard the Bayern theory, I just haven’t seen any credible reports recently implying that Xabi himself is exploring the possibility. Not at least in the same way we’ve heard with Liverpool.

Of course, the situations are different - Bayern isn’t going to sack Kompany, and there is no guarantee that Pep will leave City, and there is no guarantee that City will pick Kompany if that happens.

So, perhaps the lack of reporting around Xabi to Bayern is because it’s far more speculative that the job would even be open.

Or, it’s because he knows he’s coming to Liverpool, and it’s just a matter of time.

I’m just surprised we haven’t seen him linked with anyone else.

If you’re going to brief your journos that Slot’s not in immediate danger then it doesn’t hurt to also distance yourself from his obvious successor.

That will probably remain the party line until it doesn’t…

I’m afraid his job is safe. We’re five points ahead of Brighton with a game in hand. I’m really not looking forward to another season of boring, slow-paced football and the manager’s bullshit excuses.

There is zero chance he would last the whole season because we would be in trouble without that start we had. I am also with Mascot, him getting CL doesn’t much matter, the set up should enable the owners to switch even easier.

Only point of making CL is it means we don’t drop financially, a club like us can take that hit for one season not two.

But equally, it might be a return to the season before - and if the plan for Arne is to carry on with slow paced boring footy, then Hughes need to be looked at (by Edwards)

No, but now Chelsea have parted ways with Rosenior, I imagine he will end up being their top target.

Just hope he see’s sense to not touch that poisoned chalice.
