He inherited a fine squad, but one where several player were in ‘last dance’ territory. It was an aging team and it needed an injection on younger players.
That the club tried to do a huge amount of business in one summer is something that responsibility is shared for.
I think FSG have demonstrated that in football matters they don’t give a fuck what fans think. If they believe in him and his ability guide us through this run, then he’ll stay. If they don’t then he’ll go. We have absolutely no impact on the matter.
Might not be the moment right now, but clearly there’s a limit to what is acceptable to the club, IF this continues.
I’d also expect they are already looking at possible alternatives. Quietly, internally.
We had an average age above the league average, but was driven up by the ever present status of 2 players we invested big money in keeping and another we promoted to VC and are still trying to extend. This story is just completely at odds with the decisions we made this summer.
I don’t want us to be that, but he consistently picks players out of form or players going through the motions and as many have said his main tactic after going one behind is chaos, just throw on forward after forward and then concede more.
Arne needs to some how lift the players and especially have a cohesive defensive plan.
There’s a general malaise about the team. We can all see that. The explanation for this is where it gets murky.
But its increasingly clear its not simply about tactics and or the integration of new players…
I can’t see FSG accepting not qualifying for the Champions League and at the moment, it’s looking like we’ll have to win this year’s competition in order to do so. I honestly can’t see that happening.
It isn’t about replacing per se - but younger players needed bringing in. When your Centre Back is 35 and your main goal threat is 34, you do need to start planning for the future. Isak and Wirtz were bought with a view to a post Salah future.
For me last season he demonstrated he didn’t have any understanding of the EPL and I suspected a lack of respect. I think what happened today just hammers that nail all the through the wood.
I don’t give up on hope though even if not even Hodgson managed to get me as depressed. I mean FFS this Slot has good players!
I know, but he is caught between two stools at the minute. The club have invested £225m in Wirtz and Isak and Slot is obviously under pressure to get it working. He can’t drop them and he can’t play them either.
There is no way the club would sack Slot unless they have a replacement lined up. If they do have to sack him, it means Edwards/Hughes/Ward have got things badly wrong somewhere, so changing the coach is not going to be the only problem.
Presumably, they are currently pouring over the stats to see what the problem is. I suspect that we have suffered some bad luck along the way, but today was simply hopeless.
I know we were joking last season about “Slot’s first big test” but the current form is. Can he turn it around, or do we really need a change of direction?
