Arne Slot - Head Coach

Spot on with most of this.

My main issue is players do need to take more personal pride and responsibility in their performances, it isn’t just down to the manager.

It feels his tactics have become blurred due to losing against teams playing the long ball.

Yep, and the set-piece defending, which he just cannot seem to figure out

Cheer on cheaty for one game against Real fucking Madrid so that we could get Xabi in? Absolutely would want them to win in that circumstances, not that I’d bring myself to watch them play

I’d be surprised if Xabi gets sacked so quickly, no matter what the Madrid rags put out there.

But if he does, the one thing I’d say is that there’s no better manager in the world to get the most out of Florian Wirtz.

Saw an interesting clip of Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt weighing in on this Salah thing. They made a very good point about Fergie - Beckham, Keane, Jaap Stam - he fucked them off quickly because of various issues. Big superstar players that overstepped the mark etc. Nicky Butt said whether it was right or wrong, once the line was crossed they were out - because HE was the boss, not the players - even Roy Keane wasn’t above it. He suggested Arne does the same with Mo otherwise he’ll loose credibility and won’t show he’s a true leader.
As it happens I think Slot will be gone soon anyway as surely the board won’t want too many more performances like we’ve seen, but that aside - is he right on it, in principle?

I think that might be a questionable retelling. There is no doubt Fergie saw himself as the top dog but Stam was moved on because the club thought his stats were dropping, Fergie later admitted that they got that decision wrong as they were using the wrong stats to measure him by.

Beckham wanted the move to Real - perhaps tired of the Fergie’s behaviour in the dressing room (I think Fergie threw a shoe at him which caught him in the face at one point?).

Keane had been in decline and becoming more frustrated as the quality of the squad around him was similarly falling.

Just because Fergie did it, and was reportedly right for him, doesn’t mean it is the right thing for slot or our club.

Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt were there mate so I’m not sure it’s questionable
I think the modern game is a different beast to a certain extent and unfortunately the players do have more power than the managers in some ways. I can’t for the life of me remember who it was, but I saw an interview with an ex premier league manager (I think it was a Warnock type manager if not him) who said he had an issue with a player - that player turned round to him and said ‘you’ll be out of this club way before I will’ or words to that effect, and if I remember correctly he said he was right!
Fergie was a different breed and he had already earned the right to rule with a rod of iron over players like Roy Keane - most managers are only in a job for 2 or 3 seasons if they’re lucky so it hard for anyone to put themselves in that sort of authority position.

It is entirely questionable, they’re unreliable witnesses - as I said, Fergie himself has talked about why he moved Stam on.

And times have changed. The old hammer the table with your fists style of management is gone.

Jesus Christ, you can’t be this dense! The point of my post is that Nicky Butt said Fergie moved him on despite him being a massive superstar - the reason isn’t the bloody point - maybe he wasn’t playing well, maybe he fucked his wife, maybe he forgot to put sugar in the cup of tea he made him - it’s not relevant!!
This place really pisses me off sometimes - I swear people intentionally ‘miss the point’ and just want to look for a way derail the conversation and create an argument!

Jurgen was similarly ruthless when he felt a player wasn’t pushing the train - witness Mamadou Sakho.

Agreed!

Fergie also allowed Rooney to stay, and awarded him a new contract, after Rooney handed a transfer request in force a move to City.
