Because it’s a massive risk, that’s why. If it goes tits up any benefit gained by not giving him a payout is massively outweighed by the damage of not qualifying for the Champions League for one not to mention how the Club would go about effective recruitment. I get that you want to defend your stance but you’ve been around the block long enough to know that what you’ve just proposed is not the way to run a competent football club.
No, I’m telling fairy tales. If you don’t want to believe it, fine, no problem, but since he’s been with us, he’s played boring football in large parts of matches and in almost the entire match this season.
He makes us play exactly like my mate said he would at his previous clubs AZ and Feyenoord. Possession is sacred, play the ball wide or backwards, and only when there’s no other option do you take more risks.
Slot admires Guardiola. It’s not surprising to see him favour endless, listless passing, although one would expect to combine it with other elements that lead to a breakthrough like off the ball movement following practiced patterns. All we seem to get is 5-yard passes from A to B and an aversion towards taking risks.
It may be beneficial in regard to establishing and retaining control, but it has also made us dull and predictable.
Stop being so touchy. I’m just commenting that Slot himself has said he plays attacking football, the reports I’ve seen from his Feyenoord days are that he plays with aggressive, fast wingers, and personally other than this spell in which he has noticeably put the handbrake on, I don’t think we have been particularly boring to watch. More control than Klopp, but he won the league which goes a long way.
Also if you are not a fan of boring, controlled football with loads of sideways passing, why is your username Lucas Leiva?
It could also be that currently we aren’t the best version of ourselves (due to different reasons, a bad pre-season, transfers that have raised many questions, player missing) and Slot said a few times in his most recent interviews that this is not how he wants us to play.
It’s football, it’s not exact science. It happens from time to time that a team ends up in the mud a bit, tough to beat, but also struggles to break down teams. It isn’t solved by turning on a switch that says “play faster!”.
The other thing is that most fans want or think football should be play constantly forward and constantnly at full pace, which is not possible nor it is top quality football. Look at how some of the best sides in the world today play, be it clubs or national teams.
So your logic is that without a new contract before the start of next season we’re at greater risk of not qualifying for the CL?
And say we give him a new contract at the end of this season but he starts next season with 8 losses in the first 10, we’re still going to sack him then and have to go recruit someone.
I just don’t see that there’s any risk to us. It’s not like he’s off to Madrid on a bosman.
No, that’s not what I said at all. What I said was any benefit of avoiding a payout would be negated if it went tits up. I will be absolutely gobsmacked if they went into next season with your idea. You can bookmark this and mock me ruthlessly if that does happen.
If it goes tits up next season what would the benefit have been in giving him a new contract in the summer?
I’m confused by whether you think he should be given a no contract or not given the risk of this current sub-par performance continue. Or are you saying to just get rid in the summer no matter what.
For me the sensible approach is see how this season finishes first. No CL football and I think he has to go. Get CL football and I want to see us start better than we’re playing now before we commit to a new deal. Worst case is you either pull the plug in mid-season because someone you want is available, you let him move on at the end of the season if it’s not getting better or a strong start you get the new deal done early on in the season.
If they’ve given him an extension in the Summer then they’ve backed him and that will form the basis of our transfer dealings. There will be a review, he’s got this season and one year left which for us is unprecedented not to have addressed by now which in itself is an indication that his position is not secure.
I personally highly doubt that he’ll be given an extension if some sign of an improved style of play and cohesiveness isn’t shown by the end of the season.
Yet our worst players at the beginning of the season were, Ibou, Macallister, Mo and Cody, all regulars last season and Robbo does look vulnerable against tricky wingers now.
As I said in another post, it is getting the balance right and that hopefully will come when we have all our best players available and the players get even more familiar with each other.,
Timing is such an important thing in life. Sometimes we control it and make it happen. Other times it is out of our control and just happens.
I’ve been thinking about that with regard to Slot and Alonso. Arguably, while we are waiting to see which way it goes with Slot for the rest of the season, Man City might get in there and sign him up to be Guardiola’s replacement.
Because of that, I would imagine that Hughes is getting in there with some contingency, ‘what if’ type of scenarios for Alonso to mull over, and as the season progresses the conversation may or may not get more serious with Alonso. At the least, I would imagine Hughes would want to be informed if another team makes a move for Alonso.
Obviously any conversation with Alonso would be tactful confidential, but regardless of which side you come out on with regard to Slot, there is a decision that will need to be made. It would seem remiss to not at least have a contingency conversation with an available candidate that you previously wanted.
I hope Slot stays for the long haul as it would mean he has turned it around sufficiently and we are doing better.
Still, as fans on a football forum we talk about the various angles. Slot has been struggling to the degree that there has been a debate for most of the season about whether or not he should stay or go. Alonso, a candidate we previously looked at, has all of a sudden become available.
It seems a fair talking point to me, though I can see how it might be a little unbecoming.
Probably the way they have always done, yes. By engaging whoever is in charge as to what the needs of the team are. Not sure why people have the idea that Slot, or whoever else, simply gets the memo and gets players rocking up without his blessing.
We’ve moved on a long way from Rodgers and his antics.
