Arne Slot - Head Coach

It is quite unbecoming for me to say the least. Especially in view of the current situation with the team- the almost daily challenges that the season’s thrown up, both on and off field…

And contrast that with the Alonso situation. Brilliant young manager.
But has just failed badly in a big club (albeit Madrid with its complexities), specifically from inability to get his players to buy into his vision of the game…

That rarely happened under Rodgers though, the first buys were his and then from on they seemed to get a buy each.

This is a Liverpool football forum. Arne isn’t reading this board. I’m not sure why people think that we can’t talk about Xabi as a potential replacement. It’s not unbecoming. It’s to be expected in light of the circumstances.

The notion that it is inappropriate to talk about the head coach’s position in light of the season we’ve experienced thus far - on a message board specifically purposed to talk about the club - is absurd.

Exactly. Slot will be part of the process, new contract or not.

No one has said he has players forced on him. Saying that I’m not sure he’s shown he was entirely on board with the Chiesa transfer.

Basically there’s no rush for us to give him a new contract. It can wait until we see how he starts next season, if he indeed lasts that long.

Its not inappropriate to talk about the manager. But it is absurd in the context of Alonso’s firing, his tenure at Madrid and presumed availability.

If your issue that that you don’t want to hire Alonso, then that’s your position and argue that.

Saying it’s unbecoming to talk about suggests the topic itself is inappropriate, which is, again, absurd.

Context, bro
Context…

The context is that we have a very successful manager who is working thru a very challenging season, dealing with stuff both within but mostly outside his control.

And the absurdity is reflected in the hankering for a replacement with a young manager who’s just had a disastrous short tenure at a big club…

In football, context is everything…

Bro, the problem is that your purported context is slanted towards Arne. How about this for context.

Arne inherited a top side.
He put together six months of great performances with very little changes.
Ever since then, the performances have cratered to historic depths.
That is despite a record breaking 450M in club investments over the summer.
And the club has no identity at the moment. No consistent style of play.
And it appears that Slot is lost at how to address it.

And Xabi Alonso, who was credibly reported to be the club’s preferred choice to follow Klopp, was sacked by Real Madrid after - let’s say it together - five total losses across all competitions. Or, less than the number that Slot had in the month of October.

You could say that my context is “slanted” against Arne. And maybe that’s true. But there is truth in both slants.

So yeah, context bro, there’s a reason why people are discussing Alonso.

But hey, if you want to keep backing Slot, go for it. I hope Slot succeeds. I’d rather see that over anything else.

No its not slanted against Slot. Its riddled with inaccuracies and half truths.

For one, we had a brilliant 2024/2025 season. A season last time I checked is not 6 months. The fudging of timelines by some of you is just pathetic…

Second, Alonso wasn’t fired for five losses. He failed with a squad with a value exceeding 1billion, specifically failed to get buy-in to his vision…

I agree with you.

My unbecoming comment was an acknowledgment that for some posters it’s impertinent. We can see that in the conversation that followed!

Peace and love to all. Didn’t mean to drop a bomb, but rather, just talk about something that seemed rather obvious in its timing. Not sure how Hughes and the decision makers will play it, but my opinion is they will at least want to be informed of any offers Alonso receives, and may even get into tentative ‘what if’ discussions as the season progresses.

Part of me would rather that sort of thing didn’t happen. And part of me would rather we were prepared for various eventualities, though crucially, with decorum and confidentiality.

Like pretty much any senior role, a manager’s job security comes down to three things

  • Performance
  • Relationships
  • Finances

At the moment, Slot has question marks over all three.

Despite spending heavily, the integration of new signings and overall squad usage has been poor. There are credible reports of tensions with players, clashes with the sporting director, and the club has already moved on parts of his coaching staff.

On the financial side, our odds of qualifying for the Champions League are barely above 50%. Missing out would significantly magnify the risk attached to recent transfer spending.

That combination of poor results, strained internal relationships, and financial risk (elevated by his spending) is why the pressure is structural rather than reactive.

When a manager becomes available who was your primary target 2 years ago, knows how to get the most out of two of your new signings, and has a connection and affinity to the club it would be foolish for the club not to have him on their radar.

He is regarded a top manager. If he does not end up here, it will likely be City, or Munich.

To be clear - I agreed with you initially and I agree with your comment here as well. I don’t see a problem with having the discussion considering the circumstances, and those who feel otherwise are welcome not to participate.

I’d rather debate the merits of Alonso then bat away posters who feel like you can’t even have the discussion out of some misplaced sense of decorum.

Based on what?
What were the odds for PSG at this time last season?

Betting odds, OPTA super computer predictions, our form and position in the table. Take your pick.

Reality is that we are fighting for fourth against United, Chelsea, Newcastle and Brentford. With 4 points covering all those teams.

Show me what those odds were for PSG at this time last season

If we end up staggering through this season without winning anything; due to disjointed performance after disjointed performance; but end up in the top four… I can still see Slot being in charge at the beginning of next season.

However, if things don’t get any better next season, and the season is another disaster class in Slot being a slow learner in how to get the supporters excited about our football again, yet we again qualify for CL… I can see him being shown the door at Anfield at the season end… with a thanks but no more please..

For what happens next, I can see Jurgen coming back for 3yrs..!
Reason being, I don’t think either LFC or Jurgen himself has closed the book on us…

Now what time do the bookies open by me in the morning :0)

Except we were 10th in the league then and had a shite team

I genuinely haven’t seen anything about fallings out with anyone but Salah.

You also can’t pin the spending on him alone. We all know that’s not how it works at the club. And even if it was all on him “he” spent next to nothing in his first two windows meaning his net spend is barely above Spurs and about £50m less than City or Arsenal.

Poor results are on him but CL qualification for next season will be the expectation and right now he’s on course for that.

He is talking about qualifying for the CL at the end of the season!

There is no way he starts next season without a new contract. He either gets an extension or he gets the door. Like I said previously, bookmark this.
