Arne Slot - Head Coach

I saw this interesting statistic about Gakpo in the starting line up or not

My respect for Chris Waddle , Matt Upson and AI has gone up a notch.

I do feel the attacks on Gakpo are a bit harsh… what happened to YNWA. Like fine say he has been crap but hes playing every minute and hes still popping up with goals.

How odd our best performance was also missing someone at CB?

He never walks alone and never passes to the left. I still think he’s a decent player though, more to offer than Mo right now. The problem is not with the skill set/level of the players.

As I said before, Gakpo is this season’s ‘Lucas’ and ’ Hendo’, some sections of fans will only have negatives for them no matter what they do. Some players only need one moment of brilliance amongst shitty performances for these fans to go crazy over them while Gakpo just needs one mistake for them to unleash every criticism on him

Notable that the graphic above helpfully ignores the goal he scored in the Marseille game.

Yup…should be 0-3.

Not disputing that - but the final score was 0-3 - not 2-0.

edit: Yeah that was my point - I’ve been done over by an edit

Yeah, I caught what you meant right after my post, and immediately edited my response.

Cody Gakpo is a good player, not a great one. Ideally we need better, but the criticism of him is too heavy. If Mo was having a season like last season, Gakpo’s decent-not-great play would barely register.

Adding at least one very good winger would help. Diomande can play both sides and I would go for him.

If we had Diaz or something like to spell him would make a massive difference last season in the league he 1850 minutes this season he already has 1900 with 16 games to go.

And in a lot of games, they both played; Salah, Gakpo and Diaz turned out to be our main and most prolific attacking trio last season.

Yep, we’ve not lost any of them

All in hindsight, but say we turn a corner since the other night after the shit show so far and get top 4, do well in UCL (get to the semi) and win the FA Cup, is that enough for some people to be ok with Slot getting another Sumner window and season?

For me it has to be the manner in which we achieve those things. Better, consistently more attractive football, not just the final result.

My feeling is we haven’t the players for this ‘complete control’ style football. We just have too many players that haven’t the concentration for it (the way opposition teams have players freely running into our box from deep is proof of this).
So eventually we will have to move towards a more entertaining style or things will degrade again.
Our first half season under Slot was bloody good so if eventually we can get back to something that resembles that I’d be happy.

Like I said - you’re not buying time with beating Barnsley, Marseille or Qarabag.

Taxi for Arne. Not today but we’re not beating Newcastle or City and that should be the end.

Still surprised on how many people here think that another $50-150m will fix this. $500m wont fix this.
