We started the season with four did we not? And the suggestion was if we’d got Guehi in then we’d have let Gomez go. Not sure what he’s got to answer for.
And yet he talked Wirtz out of going to Bayern and Isak went on strike to get his move here. Not to mention Ekitike.
I think Klopp had that extra pull at a time when the club wasn’t as appealing. Now we’re less reliant on that cult of personality type manager that made Klopp so appealing as a hire.
Klopp also had strong track records at Dortmund. He was already considered an elite manager before joining us.
Slot managed to convinced new players to join us simply because he won the league last season. They absolutely wouldn’t have joined us had Slot been just a total rando.
Look, we would have won last season with Klopp as well since all of our rivals were in shamble. 82 points would have been enough.
Slot has been a dead man walking for months. Losing 9 of 12 should have been the end of him, or even earlier than that.
We don’t need to take anything away from his league win - he managed us well that year. His subs were good, the football was controlled, we deserved to win the league.
That doesn’t mean he is fit to continue as Liverpool manager. He hasn’t displayed any ability to get us out of a slump in form. His first 5 months or so were his best, and it’s all been patchy since then.
Claudio Ranieri won a league title with Leicester, and he was not even close to being a world class manager. He managed well in those particular set of circumstances but his limitations were obvious. Brendan Rodgers’ 13/14 season was similar. It looks like we’re seeing the same thing with Slot here - he has hit his ceiling.
Isak went on strike to force a move to liverpool and stand a better chance of winning more trophies (and earn more cash), playing for Slot probably played a small part in this.
re: Wirtz, yes Slot talked to him about rejecting Bayern, but there other factors that helped him make his decision to join us…
Vincent Kompany also had very good thoughts and ideas about how he wanted to integrate Florianinto the Bayern team. In the end, it was a matter of details; the decision ultimately had to do with the different sporting situations and Florian’s role.”
“Financially, there weren’t any major differences between the two clubs. Again, Bayern Munich really tried hard, but a decision had to be made. Florian saw the move abroad as a new personal and sporting challenge and therefore chose Liverpool. We all shared this view.”
I’ve given up on Slot for a while. But I don’t know what the board is trying to do right now. We’re on track to lose Champions League football next year and waste the Champions League this season. Do they really want to throw this season? No new manager, no new CBs… what are they doing? It’s a pure toxic vibe all around the club, IMO.
You can make different cases about whom he signed and didn’t sign but ultimately it looks like he failed at his biggest challenge: finding the right man to succeed Klopp.
I am very glad I didn’t watch the yesterday’s match. You couldn’t pay me to watch Slot ball anymore.Sack this fraud and sack Edwards and Hughes as well.
I think this is one of the issues that concerns me the most, and also baffles me when Slot speaks in press conferences. Complaining about players running out of gas is okay when you use players. Why not rotate Jones and Robbo and start them in either one of the games? Fine if you don’t trust Chiesa or Endo, but Robbo and Jones both have started games and played well this season. Similar to when we had the Salah situation when he could’ve given chances to both Mo and Gakpo but he started Cody in every game and benched Mo three times in a row.
I understand that its not easy to manage a squad and there are players you trust and you don’t as much, but still benching Robbo and Jones from both games don’t make sense at all, and its one of the biggest reasons why I don’t see a future with Slot that he clearly is not capable to manage the squad at the level required at the top.
I am not pardoning Slot by any means for this run of form, but I do think he’s suffering from a lack of options right now. The only striker who is firing right now is Ekitike, and he doesn’t want to overplay him and risk injury. Wirtz is still adapting to the fitness of the league - he often looks knackered. Salah and Gakpo and Chiesa and Rio are not offering much end product.
Then you’ve got a back line that’s falling apart all over, with no chance of recovery. No rest. No rotation.
There are no reinforcements coming. Hell, they were just trying to sell Robbo, which I’m not sure how you can justify if Joe has to miss time.
FSG really needs to decide now if they’re backing Slot long term or cutting bait. If they believe in him, bring in reinforcements now. Salvage the season.
It’s not, blame should be shared between him and the directors. As I said, the squad needed a centre-back (at least) and a versatile attacker, the only thing we’ve heard so far is about selling Robertson. That tells you everything.
Slot has just overtaken Klopp’s 20/21 run where he returned 6W 4D 8L vs Slot’s current 5W 6D 7L. The problem for Slot is that things haven’t really improved massively, so we don’t feel out of the woods at all, and moreover as @redwhippet says below
we can only imagine what this will look like for (a) securing future targets and (b) keeping a hold of existing players that are performing. I need to be honest and the talk of Szobo negotiating has me with this face plastered on me:
The only tiny positive is that when we weren’t performing under Klopp, we had an ageing squad that were considered by the media to be over the hill. This team has the potential to grow so that’s the only glimmer I am holding onto.
But we’re not in the Rodgers type mess and that’s my point.
I guess that’s part of the issue with the type of manager Klopp or Mourinho or even Ferguson is. You rely on their personality and when that goes you’ve a vacuum that is impossible to fill. It’s why the club needs to be the appeal and not the manager. Be interesting to see what happens when Pep leaves City…
As for the mess, that’s largely on the field and you hope a new manager can sort. As a club we’re in a lot less of a mess than Chelsea, United, Spurs, potentially City if Pep goes. Even Villa you’ve got an obvious clash between manager and recruitment teams.
