I can see I’m not bringing many people with me on this , but I stand by it.
The distorting effect of the money in the Premier League has totally warped European competition to the extent that a bottom half premier league club would be comfortable champions league qualifiers in any of the other four big leagues.
Look at the CL standings last night. Of the eight qualifiers only three weren’t English. One of them was Spurs, for Christ’s sake.
Bournemouth play us at least twice a year. They know every blade of grass at Anfield. They know how the crowd will react. They know what they can get away with.
They know every ref that would officiate a game at Anfield…
Its different for a team from another footballing culture..
In American football, its the equivalent of conference games, where form, status and all goes out the window…
Fucking hell! I just saw 60+ posts and thought there was some important news about Slot.
Instead an extremely futile discussion on whether Bournemouth are better than Real Madrid.
Surely, if this debate has to take place, there must be somewhere better for it.
You could also argue that if Bournemouth played in league Un they wouldn’t have PL money, or in Lens played in our league they’d suddenly be awash with cash. It’s always going to be an imperfect comparison that’s full of holes.
The point is about relative strength. I think the Premier league is much, much stronger that we generally assume. To the extent that every team in the PL is really good, that’s why it’s incredibly hard, and teams drop points to each other all over the place.
People last year refused to give Liverpool credit on the basis it’s a ‘shit league’ we only won by default. They are to a lesser extent doing the same with Arsenal this year. In my opinion the exact opposite is true.
I think Mascot makes a bold claim - slightly too bold for me, but the underlying point is solid. The Premier League has a much greater depth of quality than the other leagues, to the point that even modest teams in the Prem can acquire talent from much ‘bigger’ clubs in Europe, due to the financial strength of the Prem.
Trying to work out who beats who, the further down you go, seems an impossible task to me.
To be fair, it is impossible and it will always be debatable. It’s a bit mischievous on my part to put it on those terms.
For me there is an incongruity between the attitude of people when we play a lower PL team to when be play one of the bigger teams from one of the other European League. Almost as if because a team is third in League Un, then means that must be better than the team in 15th in the PL. I always thought we’d beat Marseille, and with some ease, but I was never as confident against Leeds, or Bournemouth, or Brentford.
And a bunch of the decent ones in those countries are on a par or better than Wolves. Come on, let’s be serious. It’s not just about the value of squads; you have to factor in coaching, style of play, European experience etc.
I felt the same, but not because I think those teams are actually on average better than Marseille; but due to our attrociously uneven form. Playing in the Champions League really isn’t the same as the “regular job” (league).
He did nothing at all. When Klopp left, he promises his disciples that he will send his spirit to possess Slot just for one season and therefore it’s clear that everything Slot did last season was through the power of the holy Klopp spirit. Now that the spirit has left, Slot is now a fraud, a bald fraud …or whatever names that has been thrown at him.
