In terms of his media handling I agree, he has always come across as pretty humble and quiet, but his on field demeanor has always had that hint of everything is all about him.
Yes, he did stand up and be the one to carry the team on his back a hell of a lot, but he also had a penanche for opting to take the Hollywood shot rather than to pass the ball to a teammate that was in a better position.
Just to be clear, I’m not advocating for a Gerrard/Alonso duo. What I can see is Gerrard in a Carrick-style interim role (or the Kenny-style stabiliser role). A short-term motivator. He’s already said publicly he’d be open to it.
A lot of people insist that FSG “don’t sack managers mid-season,” but the actual sample says otherwise: 3 FSG sackings and 2 were mid-season. They’re not panickers, and they’re definitely more measured than most owners but they’re not sentimental either.
If anything, I’d bet they’ve already taken a probabilistic, accountant-style view of the situation: (Risk × Financial impact).
The key factors will be
Probability of Champions League qualification
Evidence of value creation: momentum, player development, youngster integration
Probability of a meaningful Champions League run
The upside of making a change early to plan and build properly for next season
Put all that together, and it doesn’t look good for Slot.
At this stage if he turns it around it will be the biggest achievement of his career.
Sadly I feel the same way. In fact I’m finding myself getting annoyed listening to him talking about games in a similar sort of way Rodgers used to grate on me when he spoke.
I cannot keep sitting and listening to the same reasons and excuses as to why we don’t play well. Not when we turn up for games and look so ill prepared with players looking like they’ve no clue as to how to interact with each other.
Any of us could give a similar interview after these matches and talk about what we did wrong but none of us are being paid a fortune to fix the issues.
Serious question here but has Slot ever been faced with such a difficult spell and had the experience of getting the team out of that slump? Because it honestly doesn’t look like he knows how to get out of this period of regression. And this isn’t just a bad spell, we’re approaching Hodgson levels over the past five months.
This is definitely new ground for him. After his title-winning season at Feyenoord, he had a third season there which wasn’t as successful. He finished second in the league well behind PSV, and ‘only’ won the Dutch cup.
Still, it’s not comparable with the way we have plumetted down from worthy champions last season to an inconsistent midtable-team. Take away our early winning streak (seven games), and we find ourselves with a points-average of one point per game. That’s in fact rather relegation form than mid-table (when I looked this up, I had actually to pinch myself. It’s really dire…).
Since late september of last year, we are a bottom-table club. Slot has never faced such a difficult situation during his relatively short career until now.
I totally get the Alonso point but I wouldn’t go down the Glasner route in the slightest.
Brentford to me have shown the ablity to continue even in the face of massive change, I did suggest the structure of that club maybe stronger than many imagined. I know many tipped them to be relegated on here and I didn’t think that was the case. However thats been built over a decade now.
Did they give any (valid) reasons behind that? Or is it the trepidation creeping in that a once great ex-player comes back and it goes horribly wrong for them.
Absolutely and we’ve seen enough to know Slot can’t fix this. Problem we have is if Xabi’s not available where do we go? Surely sounding outs are happening…
It’s amazing to me that anyone could look at the last few years of Liverpool and United and, based on a few games, suggest we copy their decision making.
Its not based on a few games, and no one is suggesting we turn into another Man Utd. Rodgers was close to winning the league, and he was sacked when the wheels fell off. He looked helpless with no vision as to how to arrest the slide. Unfortunately, at the moment we look visionless, no structure or plan. City were there to be beaten yesterday, and we didn’t lay a glove in them for the first fifty minutes. When we played, we played quite well. For for a limited amount of time.
Sure, its not all Slots fault, but the buck stops somewhere. And it will be him.
Appointing Alonso of indeed Gerrard isn’t the Utd blueprint. Its a way of salvaging something.
I understand the loyalty to Slot, and would have gladly given him the season.
But that was always dependant on improvement. Aside from 60 mins vs Newcastle, that hasn’t happened.
I don’t see really how the club and team is so comparable to 14/15 Liverpool.
I mean we can say that results wise both teams struggled to figure out their best XI and had a little run at some point, but that’s where all similarities stop.
There is no real value in comparing two cases like, rather focus on this now. The club is in a much better place and the team is also (to a lesser extent) I’d say. The stuff we changed during 14/15 was just a bit all over the place.
But it might not be enough. If we fail to secure CL football then I think most people will accept that in this age, seasons like that where we come from are hardly tolerable anymore. It’s not like before when even Shanks or Paisley had some weirdly low league positions from time to time.
Even Slot would I think accept it (I don’t doubt he’d love to remain and make it right next season, thinking that he could deserve a 3rd season on the basis of 1 good and 1 bad) pretty calmly if we fail in that.
It is nore comparable than suggesting we are akin to Man Utd.
Rodgers almost won a title, things went to crap and he was sacked.
Slot won the title, things go to crap and we are enitled to ask a question.
But that’s not what’s happening and you’re reverting to type in some of your disdain towards other posters. I get it; it’s emotional and tensions are high and everyone is entrenched in their views.
