Arne Slot - Head Coach

The main comparison to this (as I have read) is that we get to speculate a “what if” scenario. What if Rodgers had won the league. A lot of us feel that we are experiencing that actual “what if” scenario now. Would the club have sacked Rodgers if he had won the league and the next year was shit (as it was)?

There is a huge difference as far as the squads go. Suarez was carrying that team. Gerrard, while good enough for the side, had declined significantly. This squad is significantly stronger.

That 13/14 side was very wild, it wasn’t built on good foundations and I think even if we had won the league, some events wouldn’t have been much different.

Like selling Suarez, perhaps still not getting some top targets over the line and possibly still struggling in 14/15 like we did.

Last season even if we had finished 2nd, I have much more belief that we can compete again and win.

I’d honestly not go near Gerrard. I can’t think of any good reason to go there.

I think we need to start discussing the pros and cons of Europa League football next season.

I think most fans want to change because it’s more about the negative vibe and there’s not a single sign of improvement for too long. Same football, same mistakes, same approach for the last 5-6 months, and maybe even more because we did struggle at the end of last season as well.

I don’t like interim managers too, and I agree change now maybe isn’t the best solution and we don’t know who’s available, but from a fan’s perspective, our football now is making us suffer. I’ve lost all hope Slot could turn things around, so another 3 months in pain isn’t anyone’s choice, imo.

It’s the significant decline that’s concerning a lot of us, and not that we are not going to win the league again. If we dropped a bit from last season, fine. We have more than dropped.

If Last season we had finished 2nd, and this season dropped even lower, there would be more people looking for the sack. The only reason a remaining few want him is that we did win the title last year. If there is another valid reason, I have not heard it yet.

I think we would have had more of a chance of CL football next year if we made the ruthless decision (justified imo) and changed manager. We can still get it, all hope not lost.

For me it’s pretty simple, I always pick being in Europe. And I think the club does, too.

CL ideal, if not then EL, if not then Conference.

And I don’t agree that it’s been the same all season (things were not linearly bad or good), but ultimately it might not be enough at the end of the day.

If the club decides that they want to go a different direction at the end of or near the end of the season if certain targets aren’t accomplished and have an option in mind they believe in, then that’s what will happen and I think most people will be fine with it.

Good thing we only need fifth… oh

Good thing the teams above us haven’t been great all season.

First, I think fully expect us to make the CL…

I think the data they use in measuring Slot would be his relationship with players. I think that’s the trigger, if you ask me. And so far, thats not an issue…

The club made major strategic decisions in the summer, based on the manager identifying a problem in the 2hf of the 24/25 season:

  1. to transform the squad and game model for the long term; and
  2. To invest in top talent with high technical profile,at the high end of transfer fees, rather than spread the money out to get more players…

And it has NOT paid off yet.

From events they can control- integrating the new players, to events outside their control- injuries, Crystal Palace u-turn; Jota…

On the field, which is within the manager’s control, the team pressing system seems to be finally setting in. The question is- should it have taken this long to get to where it is atm, and its not even fully there?

Secondly, and very worrisome for me is that the team cannot maintain a high intensity game for the majority of a match; of any match. Why is this? Is it from disruption of preseason as a result of Jota passing, or a failure of the manager and his team?

Ordinarily I would favor sacking a manager with these poor results, but these are the things that give me pause. Football seldom lends itself to simplistic solutions.

The way we won the league last season, was so methodical in its preciseness, that its not simply a case of catching lightning in a bottle. Or a Brendan Rogers stumbling onto a title challenge…

From the periodization to the technical control. The evolution of the Klopp game model, with the control the German sought when he signed Thiago but never quite achieved. The transformation of Grav, Luiz, Szobo, even Jones; the tweaking of TAA’s position and Maccas’…

A manager who achieves that cannot become bad in 16 months…

I am only guessing here. But based on the roundtable interview, if nothing changes on the field and we win nothing and are out of the top 5, I think it comes down to Slot’s relationship with the players, rather than the results or Alonso being available…

And if I had to guess, I think Alonso is going to replace Pep…

On the possibility of Gerrard being an assistant to Alonso, it all boils down to what Alonso wants. If we decide to appoint Alonso, it’s up to him to put his coaching team together. If Alonso decides he could really do with Stevie as part of his set up, he will know the pros and cons more than anyone. He knows Stevie well, he knows his status as a player, his history at the club, and also his record as a coach. It’s up to Alonso. He will stand or fall by his choices. (It would be a no for me, but it would be Xabi’s call to make).

Arguably there might be an interim role for Stevie to try to G us up for the last part of the season. (See what I did there? :joy:)

That would only be if the decision makers have decided Slot is not likely to lead us to top five, and there’s more chance of Stevie doing it.

For Stevie it’s a shot to nothing. Lead us to the CL and he rides off into the sunset as a hero. Fail to achieve that, and it was a free hit, as he couldn’t quite clean up another man’s mess in such a short time.

It would be a bit harsh on Slot if he were to be let go mid-season, but it’s fair to say that our results overall have not been good enough for a long time. There’s a 10 day gap coming up between league games and if something is going to happen mid season, that’s probably the time to do it.

Honestly I feel like that all this chat is futile. It’s absolutely clear from that roundtable that the higher powers have no intention of sacking Slot. It doesn’t really matter what we think.

If they were to sack him they would be sharing culpability for this shambles. So it seems, for better or worse, they’re gonna stick by their man.

Almost refreshing to hear that a club would review issues, understand them and look to address the issues in a different way to making the manager the fall guy.

Carra thought it was indeed a sign to the public that he’s going nowhere.

I get where he’s coming from, but maybe it’s also a bit of explanation how things work and half-preparation about what might happen.

I wouldn’t be so sure if they’ve already made the decision not to sack him at the end of the season (at the latest, of course).

I will stop watching Liverpool under Slot. My health is the most important thing. Conceding so many late goals almost every match is shocking and unacceptable. Slot has turned us into a spineless football team, losing games and capitulating late in matches. For short time he managed to sweep away everything Klopp instilled in the DNA of the club for 9 years. Looks very much like Rodgers in his final season. And the longer the club keeps him at the helm, the more impossible top 5 will be.

Losing points with late, late goals vs. Bournemouth, Chelsea, Palace, $ity, Manure, Fulham, Leeds. Draws at home vs. the mighty trio coming from the Championship - Burnley, Sunderland and Leeds.

Sack him asap. Enough is enough. Liverpool fans are not masochists.

Well they are going have to sack him eventually if this continues.

The dreaded “eventually”. :face_with_crossed_out_eyes:

I’m all for fall guys if it fixes things. Just being pragmatic. And I largely defend Slot and hope he can turn it around but I don’t want to deny that sometimes sackings are a solution.

I don’t think a lot of the recent performances are the result of bad coaching actually. And I think a difference has to be made between whether the situation is largely of Slot’s making or not. And I don’t think it is.

Nobody is coaching them to switch off or panic… it is just the mental strain or a lack of confidence. The players are lost now and doing the same (unfortunately) is not going to convince them even if it could be the route to improvement. No one believes we have someone on the bench who can come off and save us or that we can be rock solid defending because everyone also knows that the RB we have has only played the position for weeks.

We are still good at scoring from open play and now improving dramatically at set pieces. I was critical of not having a new dedicated set-piece coach appointed but I stand corrected.

Against Man City, having a proper RB would have probably seen us win the game. Even signing Guehi (though he is a CB) might have given our depleted squad a confidence boost.

Having said all that, while I don’t think many things are Slot’s fault (some of course is)… but I do think a change could be a big part of the solution. A big part is rebuilding confidence and so if axing Slot makes him the fall guy for collective ills (Hughes, etc) then unfortunately the “a little” unfair might still need to be done.

It won’t change the fact that we lack defenders or could use a decent winger but a nice reset and new manager bump might be what we need to get going again.

A new manager symbolizes a fresh start which could be the invigoration the players need regardless of whether he was the problem or not.

I do think if he finishes out of the CL places and doesn’t win it that will be it for him. I think will say yes we can have a season out of it and reset but we can’t risk a second year without some improvements.

The team and what we know it can play like isn’t bad and that’s the issue, so much of it is underperforming, now with injuries that’s an excuse but its not been performing for some time.

Having only 2 fit CB’s is not an excuse for 0-0’s against Leeds and Burnley at home.

Can we pretend that the round table (I haven’t watched it) is a vote of confidence in a roundabout way?

I am sad that it has come to a point where I am hoping for a vote of confidence.
