Let’s say that the club misses out on the UCL, and gets knocked out of the FA Cup and the UCL this year.
And despite that, Slot is brought back. Perhaps given a one year extension so that he isn’t a lame duck.
I won’t be angry. It won’t be a “massive blow.”
I’ll perhaps be a bit more frustrated if Alonso goes elsewhere, as I think he’s an ideal replacement. But I’m not going to rant and rave.
I’ll hope that some reinforcements and perhaps a bedding in of Isak will lead to improved results next year, and I will be rooting for Arne. Because if Arne is succeeding, that means that the club is succeeding.
Slots biggest issue is…if he don’t like you no matter how bad someone’s playing or how desperate we are for a change…he wont play you.
Ramsey for example - we have no right back fit other than him yet this lad wont get a sniff.
OK he might not be 100% ready yet but with Gomez, unbelievably still not training after a clash with Alisson 3 weeks ago, PingPongs knackered hammy and Bradley joining Gomez as always broken - we will fudge someone in like Jones or Endo.
Its time for us to give Ramsey a go - how will we ever know he is good enough otherwise?
I was quite amazed to see people suggesting we should have appointed someone closer to Slot. Slot’s appointment came as a result of extensive data modelling suggesting that he was a very close fit for the squad we had.
I maybe wouldn’t have put it in those terms, but I agree with him that it’s inarguable that the direct Klopp>Slot transition worked as well as could be hoped given we won the league. It’s only the second time we’ve done that since 1990.
It won’t be a massive blow if he stays.
Because staying means…
Winning the CL
Or winning the FA Cup and qualifying for the CL.
Or at the very minimum qualifying for the CL.
Honestly, at this moment those goals are not achievable. So Slot will be gone.
Its sad, because he made the expectations higher by being successful in his first season. Added to quality we added in the summer.
and he was a good fit. Just that we probably need a bit more positivity or a lot more positivity about our play. More directness. Doesn’t help that teams often go into a low block when they are faced with our attack.
But here you are not making sense. A poster on a forum “obligated to make sense?”
I’m not sure you meet your own criteria here. Having said that, the transition from Klopp to Slot was handled very well… it was a huge achievement for all involved based on the fit of Slot to the previous squad.
This other transition, the fit of Slot to a squad built by Hughes… has been a different story. Eiminated from the squad are the elements that made Slot successful. Gone are the wingers who are good at 1v1s or the versatile striker who can press from the front.
Gone is the versatile inverted fullback (Geertruida / TAA) who could tuck into midfield but has the versatility to overlap… hence I can undertand his experiment with Szob.
Aye, I think discussions on whether he has handled the RB/Ramsay situation properly miss the bigger picture. There is now a growing body of evidence that for one reason or other Slot is not comfortable/capable of looking outside of a small core.
Last year it was observed, but understandably waved away as not a problem given the results. But success with this sort of attitude (limitation?) is not really sustainable. You eventually either have your core players run out of steam, or when faced with a challenging situation you are unable to get anything out of the otherwise capable players who have been marginalized. Your DoF can bring in new players to replace the ones you’re not using, but you’ll just end up with a different collection of capable players on the outside looking in.
Every situation with every player is maybe individually explainable and excusable, but when you take a step back and look at how many players have been affected by this then I think it speaks to something bigger and problematic. I don’t think you can be a success at Liverpool in the medium or long term having such a limited scope on which players you can make use of.
