Arne Slot - Head Coach

Isn’t that the best. Who wouldn’t want to do this!

Unfortunately, I believe we’re going to suffer a lot more pain before the season is finished. It’s possible we will be knocked out of the FA Cup by City, then the Champions League by PSG. Throw in defeats at Everton, Utd and Villa and the clamour for Slot’s sacking will be deafening.

Then why didn’t we replace Diaz?

I think it’s just another excuse as to why we’ve been so poor this season instead of Slot taking responsibility for not using the squad and the players available properly.

I’ve been talking a lot about Hughes not doing a good job but you’re right. This squad, unbalanced as it is, could have done a hell of a lot better this season. It was not utilised properly

I dont get why Slot is still in a job.
Sack him and bring Stevie in until end of season.
Alonso to take over in summer.

I guess the only reason that hasnt happened is LFC dont want whats happening at United where they are now unsure what to do re Carrick.

Sounds like you do know why Slot is still in a job!

Yes, that’s true. But it’s only increasing the chance of failure, isn’t it?

I really wouldn’t be surprised if a bit of complacency crept in over the summer. They choose to go into this season severely depleted in width and pace, and thought they’d sort it out. I include Slot in this too.

Not Gerrard, please.

Yes. Sooner if he wants. Otherwise I think we keep Arne until the summer unless our target (Alonso hopefully but whoever else otherwise) is willing to start sooner.

I think the likeliest reason is to not trauma whoever is incoming, assuming there is someone.

Better to let whoemever start anew in the summer, to swap out now, just triggers crisis and escalation. If they can, they will limp to May with Slot and then do the business once the season is over.

What if we win the CL? Does that change everything?

This is why I don’t expect there would be any call to keep him here if performances didn’t see an uplift. And they are just postponing the inevitable.

As for Gerrard I’d rather not, if we were to look at any change it would in be my view Rob Page who is bought into the system of how we are supposed to play.

Probably, but that’s not going to happen. What follows is we get mauled by PSG, and even more ire is generated toward Slot.

I think there will be more pain, too. The way we have been playing means advancing past Man City in the FA Cup is a tall order. Not impossible, but they would be the favorites to advance. Watching them in the Carabao final made me think they had a bit of steel about them, to counter Arsenal’s shenanigans. It will be a tough one.

As for PSG, they seem to be peaking at the fight time and facing them in the state we are in feels ominous. They looked irresistible against Chelsea as they swatted them aside in the CL and piled on the goals. I fear that we will lose heavily to them in the CL. If we play one of our best games of the season, and we have some form for being up for it in the big games (it’s a separate issue, but that’s not right) then we can keep it close. Few Liverpool fans expect us to advance, but as a fan I have to say you never know, so let’s play and find out.

I don’t see much joy ahead in either cup competition though, to be fair.

After that it will all boil down to the Premier League. Will we scrape enough points together to finish in a CL spot?

It’s touch and go. We are only in the race because others have been so inconsistent. My hope is somehow enough of our players play with a bit of pride at the end of the season, to secure passage into the European competition they all want to be in next season. Touch and go, mind.

We are only in it because those teams have been as poor as us. Frankly.

When you put it like that it makes perfect sense why Alonso doesn’t want to come in before the season ends.

Yes, why would Alonso want to come in now? I’d love for that to be the case, but there is very little upside for him to do it. He would already be here if he were willing to start before the summer, unless you believe reports that the hierarchy is sticking with Slot next season.

A week or two ago some were saying that if Alonso comes in now he essentially gets a head start. Run the rule over the players, determine what you need, then make a shortened World Cup summer as productive as possible before leading us into next season.

It sort of made sense, but for me it is not as strong an argument as Alonso (if he is coming) not wanting to get messed up in the dregs of a failing campaign.

I think I read he regretted going to the Club World Cup with Real Madrid, as he hadn’t had any time with them. Regret over that would be compounded if he took the Liverpool job on now, and oversaw an exit from the FA Cup, the CL, and perhaps even struggled to qualify for next year’s CL.

There’s a sense in which a new manager benefits from a lot of goodwill and optimism from the fans, but Alonso’s ‘star’ would be dimmed, at least somewhat, if he got smeared with the sh*t from this campaign.

A fresh start in summer, and going into a new season - even if summer is shortened by the World Cup, would surely be preferable.

I’d take those results if it definitely meant a change of manager for next season. I just couldn’t bear another year of this shite football.

Imagine two scenarios:

  1. Slot is retained. Alonso goes elsewhere (such as Man City). Next season starts. The supporters are doubters, and doubly anxious that their preferred replacement is now coaching a potential rival in England/Europe.

  2. Slot is sacked. Alonso is brought in. Clean slate. The season starts. The supporters are thrilled that one of their own is in charge. They’re believing again. Anfield is rocking.

It would take an enormous belief in Slot to take the risk associated with the first approach. Because if the club starts next year with anything but significantly improved form, it’ll be pandemonium and Slot will have to get sacked. And now, your favored replacement isn’t even available.

With Alonso, supporters will give him a leash even if things start poorly. “Give him time.” “He’s incorporating a new system.”
