Arne Slot - Head Coach

Just want to say I completely agree with everything you are saying about Trent and fullback. He was more of a playmaker, and now that man is Wirtz, in a different area of the pitch. Wirtz still needs to come to the fore, and either Bradley or Frimpong need to take hold of the right back spot, but neither will give us what Trent gave us, though they both have their own merits.

Overall I also think Salah is a growing issue for the side to solve. He’s not elite on the wing and few fullbacks are troubled by him, these days. At the same time, he still has a lot to give, but where?

Get him up top in a two, closer to the goal. He’s a clever player with an eye for a pass, and I could see him, Wirtz, Isak and Ekitike getting a good thing going (play only 2/3 strikers at a time based on form and fitness, not the name).

I find this immensely annoying. It’s ok to suggest Ibe is wasn’t really able to replace Sterling without referring to his mental health. It’s as if the only thing stopping him was his mental health issues.

Obviously that impacted on his career, but using this as a measure of taking the higher ground is as disingenuous as not noting it.

I refuse to be lectured on mental health issues, particularly as part of an argument on the persons value as a player. We can and should empathise with the guy, withut the faint praise of how well he is doing as a non league player.

What? Of course it’s relevant.

This was the quote I replied to

We miss Trent, as maligned as he was. Kinda reminds me of when Sterling left and people were saying Ibe was as good, if not better. Well, in my view neither Bradley or Frimpong have shown they can do that job.

Maybe @Quicksand could clarify what he means by ‘that job’, because I’m assuming he means everything creatively Trent brought to the team, and I think it’s reasonable to point out that neither of the new right backs are expected to do, and that being the case it’s also reasonable to wonder who is now the playmaker in the team, and the answer to that is Florian Wirtz.

I’ll put my cards on the table. Conor Bradley is a better Right Back than Trent in a traditional sense. He has better attributes across the board for the stuff that full backs should do. Would I pick him ahead of Trent, if I had the choice? Not on your life. Trent offers so much, you compensate for everything else.

I don’t think anyone who ever said Bradley is a better right back than Trent and would be fine in that role didn’t also accept that we’d also have to fundamentally change the way we play so Conor isn’t expected to run games of football.

Conor got 75% of the appearances last season that Trent had and we did that without us having to fundamentally change what we were doing. We have ample evidence from before this season of how well Bradley could step in and what impact it had on us as a team

If Ibe was impressive when he played, we wouldn’t have got rid of him so soon. He showed certain talent initially, but certain things about him (good and bad, or better to say back then - limited) were clear. It’s actually one of the cases where the people at our club as sellers saw it differently than the public (or let’s say a part of it) and got it spot on.

The game has evolved from teams having individuals that are playmakers or so dependent on getting the build up phase going through one particular player.

We do need to get more control from our midfield in terms of passing, Slot already challenged Gravenberch near the end of last season, to improve his passing.

Of course, some players have special skills and do certain things better than others.

Trent was highly influential in our build up from the back and then also from mid range, when we got there (not only through him). His role changed multiple times under Klopp and then again under Slot.

Wirtz is a decisive player in the final third that can drop a little bit in midfield areas to create overloads, receive, etc. Put it simply, he’s not your classic playmaker from deep, he needs “playmaking” behind him, in order to be at his best in front of it, to connect the attack and also be on the very end of things.

We have styles and we have quality. Bradley, Frimpong or whoever else can be a top quality RB for Liverpool in their own ways. In terms of quality and proven options, so far there is nothing wrong saying that we’ve seen a downgrade from Trent.

And I don’t think anyone is asking the current lads to play in a style like Trent did, but obviously we need more availability, quality and consistency from any of them.

It’s up to the new lads and perhaps some other lads so grab that position.

In more than one phase of the game, we’ll have to show improvement; build up, pressing, defensive transition and set-pieces.

And that will be down to more than just “who is playing instead of Trent” or “what’s Wirtz doing” (and how the two is connected, a little bit but not a lot).

Far too early to dismiss this season.

It’s not a great start (especially in terms of performance levels, because certain issues were clear in pre-season already) and now there’s not a lot of time to train, but there are still ways to improve for this season, compete and win (something).

We can be both patient for certain processes for the long term and still maintain a certain standard, as league champions, not to tolerate certain things in the short term.

Pretty sure the squad has the same mentality. Now it’s actually time to forget about the future and focus on the now, what will make us perform better in coming weeks. The season is still very much alive.

The job TAA did.

I don’t think this is about whether we added the right players this summer. All of our major signings were of excellent quality - with two of them (Wirtz/Isak) being world class before they came here and Ekitike looking like he will be a world class striker. The issues are not about the signings or even individual players.

The issue is in the collective. There is no cohesion. Very little pressure is being put on the opponents. Players are afraid or unwilling to press because they have not been drilled how to effectively to so and/or they do not trust their cover. The attack has been muted because players don’t know what to expect from one another. You have Mo turning down passes to take wild shots. Wirtz making runs that no one exploits, and/or making passes that no one is there to take and finish.

As I’ve said many times here, you cannot judge our summer based off of a few games or even a few months. There was always going to be a huge amount of turnover from a title winning squad. And guess what? That turnover will continue as Mo, Van Dijk, Robbo, and Ibou start running down their deals, or as players like Macca are linked with Barca.

The natural consequence of that turnover is exactly what we’re seeing - a disjointed mess that at times clicks wonderfully and at other times looks like a bunch of guys who play like they just met for the first time on the bus that morning.

It’s on Arne Slot to bring them together. To give them clear instructions and an identity to build off of.

That was a key ingredient in Klopp’s magic. Sure, he was tactically brilliant and effective. But he stressed the collective in everything. From how they pressed together to how they attacked together to how they defended together.

Slot benefited from inheriting the fruits of Klopp’s labor. It’s now time for him to prove he can replicate the same collective energy instead of tinkering with a finished product.

Might be earlier given the distance Gravenberch has to cover..

A really good analysis of the current state of the team.

I cannot stand the host of the podcast. He just seemed to read any sensational posts or created headlines from social media or stats (without properly analyzing them), and tossed them out there for the guests to answer.

Results wise, the start of the season was ahead of where I thought we would be and recently it has been behind.

Performance wise I think we are hitting expectation for a team that was so drastically overhauled. Give it time.

I think for all of the crticism, much of which is probably fair, one thing that is getting overlooked is that it has been a pretty tough set of fixtures.

  • 2 teams who would be expecting to challenge for the title (Arse, Chel).
  • Another that will be hoping for CL qualification (Newc)
  • A sneaky good side who will be an outside contender for European places (Bour)
  • A nasty derby against a side that is always more of a difficult game for us than they pose for anyone else
  • The form team in all of the prem (Pal) who will also be hoping for a european spot

If you accept the hindsight of understanding a bit more about Bournemouth’s quality than was commonly understood on day 1, it’s only Burnley who you’d identify as being a “easy” game.

@Sweeting called it before our match against them. He said that going by the stats, they should be in the run for a top four place this season. Pretty impressive to be fair.

@Sweeting was probably the only one credit to him though. They are my second team and I had concerns, I didn’t expect a massive drop off but still dropping a bit.

3 away games in a week and 4 in 5 is crazy really. Our performances aren’t great that’s evidently clear and Arne looked a little lost on Saturday.

Oddly if the ref had played the minimum amount of stoppage time this woeful side with no quality would be top. I’m not against more time played it should if there is stoppages it’s just a point to make. I don’t think we are as bad as some make out just not as good as it seemed a few weeks back.

I still don’t know what to make of us so far. There’re so many variables, and looking at the fixtures, I want to see where we’re at come the Inter game in December.

  • The impact of Jota’s passing on the players who played with him.
  • Transfers in/out and adjustment period needed.
  • Our tactical set-up combined with those new players needing to settle in and learn with little actual training time.
  • Our poor performances since the PSG home game and Newcastle Carabao Cup Final defeat. I still think there were more questionable performances since the Plymouth loss in the FA Cup a month before, but we did beat Man City away, Newcastle at home, PSG away in that run, but there were signs in the other games. Are those poor performances due to us taking the foot off the gas as having the league pretty much wrapped up, and having to cope with a tough exit to PSG in the UCL? It feels like it’s carried on into this season, although we’ve bagged some big wins and late winners.

I always like to see an identity on the pitch, but due to the above, I don’t quite see it at the moment. Our run up to, and including the first week of 2026 is as follows:

Man Utd (h) PL
Frankfurt (a) UCL
Brentford (a) PL
Crystal Palace (h) CC
Aston Villa (h) PL
Real Madrid (h) UCL
Man City (a) PL
Nottm Forest (h) PL
PSV (h) UCL
West Ham (a) PL
Sunderland (h) PL
Leeds (a) PL
Inter (h) UCL
Brighton (h) PL
Spurs (a) PL - 20th Dec Xmas Period
Wolves (h) PL - 27th Dec Xmas Period
Leeds (h) PL - 30th Dec Xmas Period
Fulham (a) PL - 3rd Jan New Year
Arsenal (a) PL - 7th Jan New Year

I’m looking at that Inter game as hopefully seeing the players much more settled with games under their belt, and more cohesion on the pitch. The Christmas period looks okay on paper, but then again, there’s two potential Carabao Cup game to throw into the mix if we get past Palace.

In the short term, I want to see us play well against Man Utd. Win, lose or draw, I want to see a better performance for longer periods of the game. The caveat is a lot of our squad are away on internationals.

I’m not sure it’s the right timing for this post on my feelings so far on Slot.
Firstly I must say that he’s surely a good coach.
At the start of last season I was very pleased with how things were going. I thought I understood the tactics he got the best out of some players, namely Gravenberch, Gakpo and Konatè. Having said that he changed Robertson’s and Trent’s roles which didn’t favor them. Whatever we had a great first half of the season and looked like the best team in Europe if not the world.
Then things got muddled. The tactics went and the players didn’t look like they knew what they were doing, they lost confidence in the system and certain looked very tired, namely Gravenberch. The only player that seemed to improve was Mc Alistair. To keep going we relied more and more on Trent and Salah to pull us through.
So far this season we have looked disjointed, can not get the ball out of defense, press is all over the place. It’s like the players haven’t a clue what they are supposed to do and that with a decent core of Dutch players who should understand what Slot is asking for. We get through because we have good players and despite the tactics. Last seasons standouts look a shadow of their past form of a year ago, Gravenberch looks whacked already.
I haven’t a clue how we got here however my guess is a communication problem somewhere between Slot and the players.
Another point is some substitutions during the game seem strange however this might be due to Slot’s ideas about using a small group and grinding them into the ground.
Anyway it’s quite a while since things have felt right and we seem to be getting worst not better.
