I know he gave away billions to the Gates foundation some years ago, to boost vaccinations and fight preventable diseases in the developing world.

Yes, he has been giving money to the Gates foundation for nearly 20 years now, who have probably been the biggest benefactors of his donations so far. His plan going forwards will be to donate mostly through foundations his kids run I think.

Buffett is an interesting case in which he knows how to benefit from the markets and enjoys it but thus feels any wins from said market is too much.
Most of them are somewhat different, those with thousands need millions and those with millions need billions.
And it comes to a head when you see one of those in the thousands bracket pleading poverty. And then you look at their daily spend.

Very few people actually recognise that they’re rich. My In-laws have property worth $100m and unspecified sums in stocks, bonds etc and they still don’t consider themselves wealthy because the people they hang around with probably have even more.

Musk is much worse than most Nation States under dictatorial rule, in many ways (sure, Human Rights for own citizens is not one of them). Most of those have not anywhere near this kind of power and does not dare to directly seek regime change in another (particularly “allied”, which makes this rather much worse I would say) democratic state:
There are only a very, very few, select authoritarian states with this gall. Russia and China (maybe US soon, depending on what will happen there in the next coming years). I remind you that China does not generally do such things. It is far from this agressive in general (industrial espionage is different and an entirely different realm with different rules). Russia is doing such things, at times also Israel when select state interests at play (see Mossad operations agains the ICC, although the ICC is not at all a state), and India has sent assassination squads to Canada etc., but would probably not sign on to campaign to topple political leadership of Canada.
What Musk is doing is fairly unique and not something most states dares to do.
