Breaking News Thread (Part 2)

That probably depends on the explosive power of your diarrhoea.

Aren’t they saying it was a viral pneumonic now, not yersinia pestis?

I havent seen it but the alternatives are either that this a new antibiotic resistance form of pneumonic plague or it is a pulmonary infection unrelated to the plague being studied there. The latter seems a lot better, yet what sort of peneumonia requires this form of shut down.

Sounds like the plot to an old Terry Nation series.

And of course I cannot wait until Trump learns pneumonia starts with the letter p

“lots of people dont know that”

When I had it, it was called Lungenentzündung. Silent “p” was the least of my troubles.

I also had to get a sick note, which is known locally as a Arbeitsunfähigkeitsbescheinigung. Try saying that when you can’t even breathe.

I honestly think the Germans are taking the piss sometimes…

I get that compound angst/envy to a degree, but really the difference between the German word and ‘lung infection’ is mostly three letters more and a space between them less. :winking_face_with_tongue:

I know this was talking about commercial fridges, but m initial thought was the stupidity of connected home appliances. God, just make it stop. I dont want to have to run a fucking VPN to keep my milk fresh

It seems unbelievable to me that we don’t have the tech to make it much harder…

After a recent renovation, we have an absurdly expensive refrigerator. Architectural built-in, with all the bells and whistles, including internet connection. I have yet to figure out why exactly I would want that, or what that actually does. However, it failed and the technician who came to replace it explained that because the electronics were all in a potted enclosure the entire unit had to be replaced - even though the core functioning systems (compressor, etc) were all completely fine.

Absolutely absurd.

It strikes me mostly as an opportunity to introduce more (and more expensive) planned obsolescence. A good fridge should last you a couple of decades. The only way you can get people to replace them more often is by introducing more breakable components.

I think US manufacturers have done that fairly thoroughly already. In this case, the (German) fridge was only six months old and was covered by a 7-year warranty. Replaced at no expense to us, but that involved shipping a 2.5 meter crate and a full reinstall, all for an electronics unit smaller than your forearm. The net effect is that I would never buy from them again, because the day the warranty expires I will be waiting for it to become a brick.

A faraday box makes it much harder. ÂŁ10 on Amazon. Just remember to put your keys in it.

This PHP hack is a disaster. My wife’s just discovered it’s embedded loads of graphic porn in my browser history.

This stuff is out of control!
