I lived in Kumamoto for a couple of years which is next to Miyazaki and Kagoshima which both appear to be bearing the brunt of this typhoon. I hope there is no serious damage as both are lovely places to visit (or live). The typhoons I saw back then were fascinating to me because I’d never seen anything like them before and so didn’t know what to expect - with the trees bending at right angles and signs flying off in the wind, I never knew if the roof of my old style house would be next!
Firstly, for those who don’t know, Kyushu is fairly big for an island. It’s actually bigger than Wales.
Anyway, Kyushu bore the brunt of it and there’s quite a bit of damage in Miyazaki where an unusual phenomenon occurred; wind gusts developed into tornadoes. It seems that most of the damage was done by the tornadoes.
This is a very slow moving typhoon which means that the wind is not really hurricane force but there will be a huge amount of rain. There’s flooding all over Kyushu and the rain is now spreading north and east. Landslides will be a problem and at least three people have already been killed in one landslide. The latest satellite pic shows it currently crossing the sea between Kyushu and the island of Shikoku, which is the fourth biggest of the four main islands. It’s very mountainous there so there’s the potential for numerous landslides. That puts it on track for the Kansai region (Osaka, Kobe and Kyoto). One of my kids is currently at Universal Studios in Osaka. Hope she gets out of there before it arrives, but I think her journey home may be delayed.
This is going to go on into next week with the typhoon bringing torrential rain to almost all of Japan. I’ve heard of five deaths so far. That number will go up.
We’ll get some rain here but I don’t expect it to cause any major flooding. These things usually affect the Pacific coast more than the Japan Sea side of Japan, which is where I am.
Good luck LA!
I’ll be fine thanks. I’m just glad that the garden will finally get a good soaking. Until recently we’d been without rain for about five weeks and it’s been somewhat on the hot side. I think this has been the hottest summer I’ve ever had here with temps at nearly 40 at times.
I have to admit this has me perplexed. Originally I thought there’s no way on earth somebody is going to be wrongly convicted of a crime of this magnitude. (While not ignoring past travesties , and knowing that British justice can be an actual oxymoron.) But then the doubts started to creep in almost as soon as she was convicted , and now this. Has anybody else seriously considered that she might be innocent ?
Holy SHIT!!!
WTF?
If the children do turn out to be guilty, I’d put the parents in the slammer too.
It seems like a racial hate crime from what i’ve read. Children imitate their parents and if it does turn out to be a racial hate crime , You know where they are getting the ideas in their head.
@Sithbare what’s happening in Monipur?
ethnic violence between the kuki’s and the other tribal groups.
needless to say, Modi govt has made a mess over there
The statistics show the gun is overwhelmingly more likely to kill you or one of your family than it is to be used in a heroic act of defense. That is what you should be focusing your hopes on never happening.
“but that wont happen to me because I am responsible and know how to use it” is what everyone else thinks as well.
Would you share some reliable links? The international news outlets are at best superfluous.
Searching for those myself.
Where does Print stands in terms of reliability?
It’s pretty good.
Loved this mans voice, sad to see he has gone
After Japan it’s the South. The typhoon landed on the weekend but rain hasn’t let up.
Extensive damage to Hainan, China and Northern Vietnam. My home city is flooded, my Mum said it’s the worst typhoon in memory.
In Chiangrai’s Maesai, near the Burmese border, the worst floods in more than half a century reached above knee height in the villages. The older folks are being evacuated to higher 2-storey houses by their neighbours. Been raining nonstop for the last 4 days.
So says my contacts there.
