A very good thread with live updates. Do read, I cannot post 49 tweets or Cynicaloldgit will summon forth and send the spirits of his dead ancestors to haunt not only me, but the spirits of my dead ancestors. I do not know all my ancestors, but I am sure some of them don’t deserve that.
So, we’ll soon have two military dictatorships facing each other from now on in this country? A communist regime on one hand, and an ultra-capitalist one on the other. That seems only fitting for these troubled times…
Too early to predict the outcome, but I think this will fail. A coup, if it’s a coup and it looks like a coup, requires more public support. If he is supported by all security forces, then it can succeed, but then the governance must be dictatorial and not a soft coup, which is politically very problematic for ROK’s foreign relations.
In any case, ever since the end of 2021, the world has gone from crisis to crisis. We live in Interesting Times and it sucks.
The troops sent by the president to make sure the National Assembly did not manage to vote, did not really do much, I note. The National Assembly barricaded themselves inside, but the troops didn’t really try to brech and throw them out…
I kind of pity these soldiers. Fucked up orders to be given. But at least there are currently no reports of severe violence:
Note: The leader of the president’s OWN PARTY, condemns the Marshal Law and the acts of the president.
The soldiers left when the Parliamentary Speaker told them that the Parliament had voted to cancel Marshal Law: “Now that martial law has been nullified, you need to leave.”
Just to make sure everyone understands my view: Yoon definitely attempted a coup d’etat, Whenever I refer to any aspect of that effort as being half-hearted, I mean on the part of (most of) the police and soldiers who he tasked with executing it.
Also, while I think Yoon’s done — coups need to be swift to be effective — that doesn’t mean I think he’ll just give up. There is a good chance he digs in his heels and tries to drag this out. Dr. Lewis.
I am trying out Cynicaloldgit friendly posting, at times.
Also, commander of the ROK army, or his spokesman anyway, claims Marshal Law is still in effect
And now it is over, the president folded and claims the Marshal Law declaration will be withdrawn tomorrow.
