I saw this mentioned on his Bluesky feed this morning, but Robin Ince has been forced out of presenting The Infinite Monkey Cage on BBC radio because he isn’t an abusive twat on social media:
This is very much like the Gary Lineker thing. Maybe Lineker can offer him a podcast spot?
To be a Peacekeeper in Sudan during this terrible genocidal civil war must be one of the most awful postings (outside active warfare of course) in the world. You can do exactly nothing but patrol a bit and then get shot at. UN peacekeeping mandates tend to be so shitty.
Sad to hear this. I was very late to the Infinite Monkey Cage podcast, and Ince has been tremendous value each time I’ve listened. Self-deprecating next to the professor, but clearly he has a fine intellect and great wit. He also seemed generous with all the guests.
He has a working moral compass, and the sort of criticism he has given - to targets that are more than worthy, should be a nothing burger within the realms of free speech. It’s a shame that the current global trend is going in a different direction.
TBH, I’m between sad and furious over this. I was at the “Who on the Wirral” Doctor Who convention in September which he was comparing. It’s a fan run event and it is nice for people who may be socially awkward, shy, or just “on the spectrum” as they say these days.
He was just lovely with everyone. I had my nephew with me who has been suffering from bullying and abuse at his school. Robin just made him feel really welcome and included.
He’s the sort of guy that will stick up for the underdog and speak out for those that have no voice. So he is another one that has been silenced by a country that only values the sneering bully over the compassionate intellect. Who’s left? I expect they will be after Victoria Coren-Mitchell next.
It rather reminds me why i no longer live in the UK. The country is fucked.
Strong doubt. This is part of the US normalisation trend with Russia and Belarus
According to Cole, the talks with Lukashenko, which began on Friday and continued on Saturday, “were very productive.” The US envoy said the two sides discussed normalising relations as well as the war between Russia and Ukraine, noting that “Lukashenko is giving good advice on resolving the conflict in Ukraine.”
In August 2021, a year after the presidential election in Belarus, which the West did not recognise due to allegations of fraud, the US added Belaruskali, one of the world’s largest producers of potash fertilisers, to the sanctions list.
Yes, I used to live in Scotland. We moved to Germany in 2019. My wife is German. Her family’s advice was that if you think you may need to leave a country, do it on your own terms.
