Cody GAKPO: 2022/23

It might be a little quick. Hopefully I’m proved wrong.

I’d hope that all of us who hold negative opinions about our players would want to be proven wrong, so I wouldn’t think otherwise of you.

I’d agree that he’s not had the brightest of starts, but at least you can see glimpses of improvements. Had Diaz/Jota/Firmino been fit, I doubt he would have seen as many minutes as he’s had so far, instead having more time on the training ground to fit in.

In fairness Firmino was fucking shite when he first signed, so all is not lost.

Not for long, he had a slow start with Rodgers playing him out on the left. Quickly changed when Klopp moved him central. Wasn’t the best Bobby in his first season, the next bit was to become more consistent, but you already saw he’d be an important player for us.

I haven’t given up on if Gakpo. I don’t know if he is going to make it here or not yet. I think he should play on the left wing with Nunez up top. He played left wing the first game, and then Nunez got injured. I expect when Nunez is match fit it to go back that way.

Agree with some of the comments people have made

Absolutely agree with Worgan on the lack of aggression has been fairly noticeable, I think many knew before we signed he wasn’t the Mane/Diaz type player…but I’m ok with that so long as it doesn’t become a lack of work rate…today he seemed a little stationary.

and positioning and where he’s most effective (centrally or on the left), he looks like a player that needs immediate support or players close by so he can play off…not sure that comes from playing him centrally unless it’s part of a front 2 which has seemingly gone out of fashion…his best work has come as a result from the inside left channel but it looks as though we’re preparing for life without Bobby, with him taking up that central position.

Truth is he will need until at this time next year to really be judged when hopefully we’ll have some resemblance again of a functioning team but I get that with his price tag, people will want that to come a lot quicker than a lad we signed for 5-10m.

It’s not easy to come into an intense league like this, a team that is intense or at least wants to return to it’s high standards.

So, while he’s clearly not 100% there yet, it’s at least positive to see him receive the ball well, shield/turn, show good stuff in smaller spaces, show combination play with other team mates. Yeah, the pressing part needs learning and he also needs to be physically in better rhythm than he is.

Once he’s firing, once our team is also more back to it’s principles and we spend more time controlling/dominating teams, we might finally see him display his skills from a more wider position.

Too early for me to say that he’s a long term Bobby replacement. That could be Nunez in his own different way (I mean, we made a big investment on him, still up in the air how that one goes), could be Gakpo in his own different way, could be Jota for a while, could be someone completely different by then.

Jurgen…try playing him on the left seeing as thats his position. Cheers

There is no need to pigeon hole players this way.

I’ve not been impressed and sadly reflects more what Dutch was saying but hopefully a bit more settled in his own home will help him improve.

Bang average player regardless of the situation. Offers very little threat. No movement, no pace, no aggression.

The three main ingredients of our flying red three… What a baffling decision to go away from what made us great.

If we still had a solid recruitment team in place this is obviously a player who would have been veteod.

The team as a whole is not performing. That’s clear. However I’m still yet to see anything special. Not writing him off but just don’t see what the fuss there was in bringing him in. Don’t see it. Certainly not yet.

I won’t write a player off this early, but all the signs at the moment point towards what @Dutch warned us all about.

He came out of his shell today in the second half, but needs to do that much more just as a minimum. Those cut to his right foot and then drift the ball straight into the keeper’s hands needs to go.

At present, he is not offering much up front, and worse, is a liability when defending set pieces, as he is tasked with duties that he is meekly not up to.

Sums him up at the moment. Need Diaz back on the left as soon as possible, and Cody can learn in training for a few months.

Not the best way of spending whatever we spent on him.

If you squint just right, he could be a taller (more expensive) Minamino.

Yep, he’s so slow.

However Minamino was an excellent finisher
