Darwin NUNEZ: 2022/23

Robertson and Tsimikas better look over their shoulders, there’s a new world class left back in town! Joking aside, that was a performance reminiscent of Diaz when he first arrived: full of energy, direct running, immense at tracking back and setting up chances for his teammates and dreadful at shooting from good positions.

Klopp recently said that he didn’t want Nunez on the flank but judging by that performance, he might stick around for a while. I am, however, a bit disappointed by his teammates because they failed to pick up his really good runs in the inside left channel (Robertson did it twice, Elliott did it once, both had excellent positions to pick his runs - Tottenham played an uncharacteristically high line at times). Salah didn’t look too bothered to pass to him as well, though the circumstances were different - and he always gets tunnel vision when he’s near the goal anyway.

There we go.

Picked 2 really good passes against Tottenham when he had some time on the ball.

He still makes the wrong decisions sometimes, but so do the others. Really good performance again and defensively he’s as committed as anyone out there.

Like him. Hope he comes fully good. First half wanted too much time when he got in good positions. Too often closed down and blocked by defenders. Second half much better. Reminds me of that adjustment period many players need when coming into the Prem from other leagues. Like others, I’d much rather see him in the box more often using his strength.

El Loco :heart_eyes::star_struck:

Him playing a bit wider is a lesser evil than the diamond structure we played in a few games recently. Robbo pushed up more than Trent, Elliott played wider than Mo. So in reality, yesterday we were on paper a 4-3-3. Attacking we were like 3-4-3 and defending in 4-4-2 (Salah more central than Nunez). Means he had to put a shift in and he did it. A few crap touches, but I liked his assist and other passes in and around the box. Tried to find Mo a few times. Good stuff that he understands now that we have certain issues and he needs to sacrifice a little bit.

Yes.

It’s Milner when he’s on the pitch

Not anymore. Mo is the number one for a while now, even when Millie’s on the pitch.

It’s been 3 years since Millie last took a penalty during a game.

I think it is Salah, Milner or Fabinho but maybe it would now be Nunez ahead of those two.

Fabinho’s pens were up there with Milner’s to be fair. Didn’t Milner miss one, yeah I was in the stadium and watched it (I never watch pens).

Milner’s record at Liverpool is 19-2.

Nunez just joined us, I don’t think it will change much in the hierarchy. Depends also who’s on the pitch. His two penalties so far (one in pre-season and the other one against Derby) weren’t great.

I do wonder who is behind Salah mind as Fabinho took 2-3 would it still be Milner.

The only pens that are not great are missed ones.

Pep buys the deadliest strikers

Klopp creates the deadliest strikers.

I don’t like the Jesus comparisons. Jesus is doing a Firmino like role and Arsenal are top. He has been excellent and exactly what Arsenal needed.

Nunez is proving he is an outstanding talent but we don’t need the constant comparisons to Jesus to argue that.

Nunez is far better looking than Jesus or Haaland.

There you go.

I agree with @ILLOK - unfortunately, the striker he’s the most similar to is running away with the Golden Boot… That said, he’s slowly getting there, though I didn’t expect that left flank would be one of the main stations to his destination. Encouraging performance in probably every aspect aside from his first touch - he can’t trap a long ball properly to save his life…
