Darwin NUNEZ: 2022/23

Gee, thanks for ruining my evening! I wanted to say how Nunez scored a worldie against Real Madrid but then I remembered Benteke’s scissor kick at Old Trafford… Insert Twin Peaks “it is happening again” scene!

Dear lord… until now I’d been able to forget that Benteke had played for us.

That’s practically a bannable offence…

In a poor season when Darwin did play he was the most exciting player on the pitch and our only player likely to make something happen.

Darwin is the type of player you pay your hard earned money to go see.

Nothing against Jota and Gakpo as players because I like them both and appreciate what the qualities they bring but your Diaz and Nunez are different levels with their explosive pace, power and the threat they pose in general.

I’m going be honest and say Benteke was worse than Carroll.

I just don’t see how Nunez displaces Gakpo. Gakpo has been too good in that position since he joined. Honestly, I feel like if we had bought him in the summer, instead of winter, we might not even have signed Nunez.

Thats not to say Darwin is bad, but unless he adds something to his game that gives him an edge over Jota or Diaz or Gakpo, I see him being used only for cup games or as rotation option.

This is why sometimes the transfer business that Ward did baffles me.

I’m going to say, absolutely no chance of this being the case.

Well he has more end product than Diaz
I believe he is faster and better on set pieces.

This is the kind of thing that really baffles me. We have 60 odd games to play next year. There is more than enough to go round.

We’ve got five forwards and they are all going to start loads of games.

The sticking point is we spent over 110 odd million on front players when we could have used some of that money on a midfielder in the last transfer window itself. I think Gakpo and a midfielder and we get in top 4.

Anyway, whats passed is past. He will get games obviously, nothing to debate on that. We have a lot of games and neither of Jota or Diaz are completely injury free.

The point I was making was, given all of our options are fit, Nunez as of now, starts on the bench. He will improve, and so will Diaz and Gakpo. Its a good headache for Jurgen, so I don’t mind.

We can only send on whoever is available. We may have overspent on Nunez. We certainly did on Keita but we didn’t know that in advance.

We haven’t yet found the best blend. Gakpo is doing the Firmino role well, dropping deep, knitting it together, progressing with the ball on the turn and breaking the lines, and popping up with a few goals. So the point is well made that he looks like he has found a home in the middle of the three.

Mo Salah will start on the right of the three. Very few, if any, would disagree with that.

So the left is where it is open. Nunez likes to come in off the left, but now that Diaz is healthy, that’s his position. Nunez can also play centrally, so maybe Gakpo can go wide, or even deeper in more of a 4231.

I don’t quite know what is going to happen, and the best blend has not been found yet. But I am excited about the ingredients, and the depth we have up front.

Darwin Nunez will grow in importance to this team as we go, Im pretty confident of that.

Get our midfield sorted and Nunez will fire.

Until the moment Cody was signed Darwin was great but the end product was lacking.

He was great at a time when Gakpo wasn’t here, when Diaz, Jota and Bobby were injured.

I think next season the assumption so many on here seem to be making, that Diaz has the LW spot locked down, will be severely tested by Darwin.

If I’m looking at the current best front three, if there is such a thing, I would probably go for:

Nunez Gakpo Salah

Nunez would not be a chalk on your boots sort of winger, but would be close to being a central striker, just playing off the left.

Diaz and Jota would obviously both be excellent options to factor in, too. And I’m wondering if Diaz couldn’t also rotate with Salah? I know he is right footed, but I think his dribbling skill could trouble any left back, and he would have the option to go outside or inside.

For me, as things stand, only Salah is locked in.

The other 4 players can battle it out for the remaining 2 positions, I don’t care one bit which names come out on top. Just want the best combination for the team.

I don’t even have Diaz as a certain automatic starter on the left side, let alone Nunez, who has work to do. Diaz himself is yet to reach certain heights on a consistent basis.

Nunez on the left is a temporary option here and there, I really don’t think it can be long term.

People also forget about Jota sometimes in these discussions. It’s far from what’s possibly the most popular “Salah, Diaz and Nunez” trio.

We’ll see how it looks in pre-season and which attack can get us back to defending from the front like we have to, that will be the first focus for Klopp.

He is on the outside looking in. As things stand, his best chance of starting regularly is a change in formation rather than him displacing Diaz or Gapko.

We’ll see what happens.

Low-key, if Jota stays fit, he trumps them both I think (as of now). We sometimes don’t consider him, but as an out and out goalscorer, who still has a decent work rate, he’s the best of the three. Diaz is all work rate and little end product. Darwin is lot of work rate and lot of shots, but lack of link-up and lack of goals compared to shots.

Honestly, if he’s able to convert more of the shots he takes into goals, he will be a monster not far off from likes of Suarez.

Klopp will rotate based on form.

There are three strikers at least who had periods of form (if we exclude Gakpo). Say all five will rotate.
