It just dawned on me that the last of those 18 goals was that last minute winner against Forest in March last year. Back then, it looked like it was coming together for him. Little did we know that he wouldn’t score for Klopp again and get only 4 more goals under Slot.
He’s got 4 goals in his last 24 appearances. 4 goals in 10 months.
I’ve no idea whether Fowler can be relied upon for his judgment on players, but this is pretty damning… he’s now 25, so he should be entering his prime. Instead of that, he has seemingly regressed this season, albeit the club is doing well with Slot at the helm, and the system should in theory favour him. What’s wrong?
The way he set up Jota’s first goal the other night was really impressive, so he has the quality, he has the pace, he has the fighting spirit, but it’s the consistency. Why? I can’t get my head around it to be honest.
Yeah I saw that clip. It’s an interesting take from Fowler and I agree with some of those things. I think he has a good way of describing things about strikers, also if I remember well from the past.
The pass for Jota is certainly not something I’d call impressive though. Okay it can go wrong at times, but really at that level, he should be finding him how he did.
The biggest difference about that goal was more Szobo’s pass (and coupled with the non-reaction from the nearest Accrington player, where League Two level was on display).
I wonder how much of it is just self-doubt clouding his mind. When he has no time, he’ll just hit it instinctively, but the moment he has a little bit more room, then it can creep in.
Yeah the opposition wasn’t great, but his ball was still utterly accurate. What I meant is that he seems to have the technique, the skill, the frame and the pace to be deadly in front of goal, but yet isn’t anymore this season.
He probably had better (or impressive) assists or moves in his time here, the pass for Jota is what it was, the logical thing to do and not difficult to execute. For me that’s not impressive.
Athletically he’s really good, that’s perhaps the best part about him, the way he can bully opponents especially if he’s in a good place mentally. Good height, not heavy, fast. Lean and hungry, as Shanks used to say.
Technique wise and overall quality wise, nah, for me he’s not that good and that’s the most obvious thing about him, why he’s struggling here at this level. It’s no shame, he might do better elsewhere.
Capable of the odd skill move here and there, but it’s not consistent enough.
For me, there’s nothing mythical, misterious or difficult to understand. Apart from the confidence, luck or whatever else factor which are always there. We’ve seen him confident and less confident.
Yeah that’s where I’ve landed. He works hard, kinda swashbuckling, so fans like him. And seems popular with team mates. But at some point we’re going to lose Salah, and we need someone that can consistently provide goals and assists. I think that will involve replacing Darwin
Yeah, I think the chances are higher for our next main goalscorer to be a central striker rather than finding someone who would more or less replicate what Salah’s been doing on the right side.
We might still aim for a winger who scores a good amount of goals and of course sometimes players exceed expectations, but what Salah is producing is a bit rare.
Yes, I think his quality is the biggest reason why it hasn’t worked as thought/hoped so far and whether it’s after this (3rd) or after next (4th) season, I think it might be best to move on.
In recent weeks, from what it’s been reported, it seems like it might indeed be this summer and he doesn’t get next season. Especially if nothing seriously changes in this second part of the season.
It’s not a situation of desperately trying to get rid or that he cannot provide at least in some capacity as a squad player while he’s here, but I think it’s all nearing towards parting ways.
I saw somewhere that a club from Saudi Arabia was willing to offer a huge outlay for him, with a huge contract to boot. Possibly fake news, but maybe the club should listen to that kind of offers if they come in, in order to recoup at least a part of what was spent on the lad…
If he’s got anything about him he will , and he’ll want to prove people wrong. For a player in his prime years to be going to Saudi now is more or less saying ; ‘I’ve given up on meaningful competitive football and am quite happy to sell myself out to these sportswashing cunts.’
The other factor I think we might want to consider is his agent is Jorge Mendes.
Old Jorge does like to keep his players moving and he’s been more involved than most in the trail of players moving from Europe to Saudia Arabia where he no doubt pockets a nice chunk of cash in the process.
Ruben Neves, Cancelo, Fabinho, Ronaldo and Podence all clients of his already over there. Ederson another that’s long been linked. He’s not going to want an asset of his sat on a bench and depreciating in value if he thinks he can engineer a move for them. His non-Saudi based players predominantly play for City, PSG, Wolves or clubs in Portugal and I don’t see him going to any of them.
I have been one of the last stubborn holdouts on the Darwin Nunez bus. I see so many ingredients to make a great striker, but it just isn’t happening. He has regressed this season and his confidence is shot.
If there is any truth to the Al Hilal rumours, we should sell. We will get our money back and he will link up with his old Benfica manager, and presumably get his mojo back while making many millions before going back to Uruguay to live like a king. Arguably he might still have another move or two after Saudi to play serious football, as he is only 25 years old, but that’s up to him.
I would be concerned about leaving ourselves short, if the move happens this month. I think PSG need to stagger the KK payments to stay within PSR, but perhaps with a cash windfall from Saudi we could give Napoli the dough in one payment? That deal looks quite far gone as PSG have put in all the groundwork, but it isn’t concluded yet, and the sort of thing I just laid out might be how we could get our noses in there.
Maybe Danns is ready to take his chance? Maybe we will buy that Greek kid? Maybe we will add Jonathan David on a Bosman in the summer?
Lots of question marks but time is running out for Darwin Nunez, and if there’s good money on the table from the Saudis, it might all end quite quickly now.
