Darwin NUNEZ: 2024/25

Yeah

It isnt just his hold up play it is also his positioning, he never seems to occupy the space where you expect a clearance or a potential pass to go.

Many times, he is the wrong side rather than being in and around the channel you would expect.

Also, for his height, his aerial prowess is poor he rarely wins his aerial duels.

Except when defending corners when hé is undiscutably our best defender clearing our area with great headers.

So he is a best as a defender.

Agreed he does really well in that near post position.

back in the the late 80s and on until about 2000, there was a NFL wide receiver named Cris Carter. Made the Hall of Fame, but started his career with the Eagles where the head coach Buddy Ryan disliked him, famously criticizing him with ‘all he does is catch touchdowns’. Which sounded stupid, but was actually saying something - but he caught a lot of them

Salah is like that now. The man has had more poor 2 goal games than anyone I can think of, which sounds every bit as stupid as Ryan did.

Nunez probably needs to start working hard at all the other stuff and let the goals come to him if he has any hope of turning his LFC career around

Regarding Mo, I totally agree, poor in possession can’t beat a man and pass after pass given away
then perfect assist and a goal, LOL

This is just absolute gold, the Mo bashing is unbelievable.

Thing is, I could have sworn he was doing that with all his other recent games, but I missed most of the Wolves game thanks to my internet so, I can’t say much about that game itself.

Of course, it could just have been a one-off bad game, but it still doesn’t speak very well.

He has only scored or assisted two thirds of our goals. Get rid.

Obviously you don’t understand irony

Yeah, I think he has been trying to work hard in his appearances, I just don’t know what he was doing against Wolves.

I couldn’t say either, I didn’t watch the game! Mind you, given all that’s been written about him there was nothing to watch since he effectively wasn’t there at all, according to some.

Yep we definitely need revolution not evolution. Sorry Darwin but the theory you deserve a CF spot is debunked.

But it wasn’t though was it as you regularly have the same digs during the game. You are trying to change the tune because you have been called out.

I am right, during the game and in the post, it is ironical that what I say about his passing and sometimes shooting, compared to the result of his efforts at the end of the game.

Being called out is bollox because I do it in game, I call myself out.

In fact most of the time when I am critical, he then goes and scores or assists.

I think Nunez will give us a couple of big moments between now and summer but ultimately he will be just short of what we need and will be moved on. Not the only one, but since this is the Nunez thread, I don’t see a long term future for him here.

In the meantime, while he wears that Liverpool shirt, he will get nothing but backing from me.

I have always been optimistic about this guy producing the goods once he has settled at the club
One season, yeah okay that would be a reasonable timeline, two seasons, yeah okay he has taken longer than expected, three seasons, well

To me, as talented as he seems to be, with bags of potential he has only shown a glimpse of
well to me, herein lies the problem with Darwin. Whether it is the club, the staff, the local environment, or the English culture in general
I feel as though he is unhappy with his surroundings, and therefore, can not, and will not, ever settle to produce the player we all hoped he would become.

How I normally judge a player and his impact for the good of LFC, is I ask, would he be missed if he moved on elsewhere
As far as Darwin is concerned, and it saddens me a tad, I don’t believe the club/team would be left with a gaping hole to fill if he left
!
Here is a statement from John Aldridge after the Wolves game

"When Darwin Nunez came on, I watched him and I didn’t really see him sprint once. I was so disappointed with him.

If he doesn’t do his work-rate, that’s what he normally gives us. He normally offers work-rate and goes about upsetting people, but he didn’t really do any of those things.

"I swear, I watched him and he was just going through the motions. Now if you’re coming on as a Liverpool player for the last half-hour, you have to show the manager, the team and the fans what it means to you. That you actually want your place.

“But it looked like he had a cob on, maybe because he didn’t start the game. He was holding no balls up for us so the balls were coming back into midfield, back on top of us, and we lost out. I was completely gobsmacked. What he offered when he came on, his performance was not acceptable. In my opinion as a centre-forward, he made it harder for Liverpool by not getting involved.”

I was saying the same as this in the match thread. He was really pissing me off, just ambling around. Not typical for him tbf

I’m probably wrong here, but if there are many more performances where his application needs questioning like this, some might even start to think he is playing in such a way, that selling him is the only viable option left for all parties concerned
Be a touch sad, if he left without any positives being remembered from his spell here.

I’ve never really felt he has shown game intelligence. I expect he’s one of those players where his physique and a purple patch of form made him look great in an environment setup for him. I’d be keen to get rid in the summer for whatever we can; I actually don’t think he’s likely to do well elsewhere unless all the stars align and I think he’ll ultimately be a lesson that we won’t repeat.
