The usually reliable LFC history.net has as £20m, which tallies with my memory.
Some source at the time claimed it was £26m, but that would be the value of £20m + Garcia (it was essential a cash plus player deal, although they were kept separate for accounting purposes).
Definitely nowhere near 34m. Is that Euros? Or adjusted for inflation?
Whenever we talk about the deal for Torres with Atlético Madrid we always include Luis GarcÍa in the price. The total cost of the operation is around £20 million.
I think they’re not using the right exchange rates. In 2007, the GBPEUR rate was around 0.68 on average, and their German site uses €38m, which translates to around £26m.
Always felt in recent times like Uruguayan players have certain culture in their mentality and approach. Like a little Atletico among national team sides.
Must come from their key individuals in the recent decade or so, Tabarez being in charge of their national team for a long time, being a small population country (one of those rare examples of population vs footballing culture, Croatia are a bit the same), a team that was always compact.
Feel like if the footballing quality is good with certain individuals, you can almost bank on their approach is spot on as well.
Likes of Godin, Suarez, Cavani, etc. Maybe I forgot a few.
Nunez might have a big role to play in this post-Suarez/Cavani era, to lead their attack. I know they also have Maxi Gomez, but I don’t know enough about his talent/quality/ceiling, perhaps it was never that high.
I think the point is that given his height, frame and generally scrappiness, Nunez is going to be able to mix it with defenders and contest high balls into the box. Jota and Mane may score headers, but I don’t think either, being relatively small in stature, are able to do that
