It is an odd one when you compare it to someone like Salah or Mane. Sure, neither of them carried the “centre forward premium” but you’d say both had a bit more of a body of work behind them.
I’ve always thought the Portuguese league was over priced as a league. They aren’t a top five league but they command hefty fees for the players even though there are only really three competitive teams and usually only one or two of those are any good at any time.
They do produce or sell very good players though, so it’s an expensive shop with a decent reputation. But you’re absolutely right, we’re not buying finished articles but we are paying a fair amount more than we have for “players on the cusp” in the past. Perhaps that’s not unreasonable to expect in this case due to a number of factors. The overall market has been inflated, he’s a premium position player, he comes from a league that demands top whack for players and we had United sniffing about too.
Fantastic show from an entertainment pov, enjoyed the actor as well, and if my memory serves me correctly, his career was ruined through excessive substance abuse (think it was alcohol).
And to keep this on topic and relevant. If Darwin avoids helicopters and alcohol, he will be great for us.
A lot of these vids pointing out that he lacks in technical ability, not the sort of player we have become used to in that respect it seems. I wouldn’t say I’m worried, I’m confident that our transfers team will be a few steps ahead of the YouTube pundits and there will be a clear plan of how we intend to use Nunez. I do think however we need to temper our expectations, I don’t think he comes in and starts every game and becomes the next Liverpool legend like Torres did. More likely that he provides a different option to Jota or Firmino, and I imagine it will be a ‘horses for courses’ situation out of which one of them start. Assuming Mane does go of course, if not, what a choice Klopp has.
