The pope and reigning Catholic theology does not interpret the bible littererally though, while some Protestant denominations do indeed interpret it fundamentally. For instance, the Catholic church making allowances for science, for instance theistic evolution, is different from Pentecostals who believe that this is impossible, and that the earth is only 5000-7000 years. Besides, the Romans are the letters of Paulus, and while he is believed theologically to be directly inspired by God, conventional theology allows for interpretation since these letters are viewed to differ greatly in authority from the Evangeliums.
As far as I remember anyway. I am not a Catholic, haven’t been raised as a Catholic, so I have no expertise. I just studied religion and thus bible history for a year, as part of my college education. But I have a very imperfect memory. But I am pretty sure what I wrote above conforms with Catholic dogma.
