Defund the Police is an unhelpful phrase but there does have to be a root and branch restructuring of the service.
Why, for example, does the state of Florida own 47 former military APCs? Why does every city over 50k people have a SWAT team despite overwhelming evidence that SWAT teams are incredibly bad at doing what they are designed to do (react to highly volatile situations - such as a school shooting - they are almost always over before the team is even scrambled).
If Americans knew the facts about their police force I think most would be unhappy with it but I’m this age of disinformation it’s really hard to make anyone listen.
If you are aware of Lakhoff and framing, my degree was in language and linguistics “defund the police” isn’t a great slogan and it certainly doesn’t cross the Atlantic well especially considering that’s what the Conservatives have been doing through cuts.
Lakhoff was telling the Democrats to fight this in the Reagan/Bush era.
You can’t tie yourself to slogans like that, they may work in some states but generally won’t. You have to be careful with language it’s why Brexit won the day in my view, was easier to shout slogans rather than break down the inaccuracies.
I sat in on the far left of the Labour Party attempt at it once, no wonder it did so badly.

Just like we detest what Trump has enabled extreme right groups to use him as a front for their agenda, we should not accept that these other extreme of defunding the police to use the Left as a front when all AOC or the Left wanted is a reform which one s definitely needed and drastically different from defunding the police.

I fecking love that one of challenges was based on the testimony of some conspiracy-nut-goober who had pasted all over Facebook about the ‘FRAUD!!!’ That the same goober was also allowed in the room as an observer is more concerning…but I guess that is democracy at work…
