The Indian immigrant vote is strongly Republican. This goes back to the tropes I was talking about in my previous posts. The general sense is that the GOP has an ideology centered around personal responsibility and hard work paying off, and that Dems think we need to make sure people get by regardless of how much they earn it. This is not a statement of what the parties actually do, but it is what the vast majority of the country would say if you asked them define what each party stands for. That GOP line is very much in line with the deep rooted ideals about hard hard and self sufficiency that the Indians who come here bring with them. Those connections are very difficult to shake and tend to persist reality smacking you in the face.
I worked with a professor of world renown on a project once. One of the leading fire resistance and testing scientists. One of his wheel disks kept falling off so I offered him a handful of cable ties. He asked if I had any longer ones as the ones I gave were too short. I thought he was winding me up. The look on his face when I showed him how you connect them was almost childish delight. As practical as a jelly that bloke. Frightening.
Sorry but me too!
- What are wheel disks?
- I don’t use cable ties - I presume you can thread them through each other though?
PS. I’m not a world renowned professor. Jelly is very practical (when you want to placate three small children with a food treat and a mostly empty cupboard!)
Regarding the intelligence of people with PhDs, I think one of the things that people outside of academia underestimate is not just the absurd amount of work it takes to get through a PhD dissertation, but how myopically focused that work is. Most intelligent people when working on a project would intellectually explore the range of related issues that come up in the process, and I think the ability to do that is what most people think of when talking about “intelligence”. However, you simply cannot do that when trying to complete your dissertation. As a result, PhD programs do not select for intelligence per se. They select for people with sufficient intelligence but with the ability to laser focus for several years on one specific issue.
This is why the case of @SBYM is a curious one.
Attacking Iran is a genius idea with absolutely no downsides at all.
VERY COOL. VERY LEGAL. VERY SAFE.
It is absolutely amazing watching the same GOP Senators who argued that Obama somehow was overstepping his presidential mandate nominating a Supreme Court justice 9 months before the election smile and nod nervously as they watch a lame duck President tear the executive branch apart and make sweeping foreign policy decisions with enormous long term consequences.
I actually wish it was amazing, but by now it just seems normal.
It is. Anyone who can be surprised by anything these people do just havent been paying attention.
I think the thing that pissed me off most about the debate over ACB was that the press treated the GOP line on Garland as a legit basis on which to debate ACB. Treating the Democratic opposition to it as the hypocritical one because it was not aligned with what they were saying about Garland, rather than the Republicans who were the ones wildly changing the “rules” to whatever suited them at the time as the hypocritical ones.
He hasn’t actually Tweeted this, has he??
Coz it fucking sounds like him…

Not even the most deranged part of it. I think she sees it, and is wondering what the hell to do about it.
What the fuck is going on?
Is the whole world on low-grade acid or something??
What’s the grading system?
The stuff they are on seems a lot more toxic than the stuff I took 38 years ago.
Well I think the president and a small group of people know exactly what he meant
The mask is slipping on this reptilian!
