Ding Dong.....the US Politics Thread (Part 1)

None of the results so far have suggested anything but the status quo. Democratic House, Republican Senate, Republican WH.

I am furious at those Americans who knows Trump is a disaster but did not bother to vote.

Highest turnout in over a century, so not too many of those.

What is the turnout ? I have not seen it. Anything below 75% is a disgrace.

I mean, average voter turn out in my country is over 77% and our elections hardly matters in comparison to this one. US election turn out is generally very low.

Edit: I suspect having a parliament and actually varied parties helps with turnout but that’s speculation on my side.

Hah - US has not hit 75% since 1896. This election appears to be a high since the 60s, quite possibly in the past hundred years.

Popular vote appears very similar to last time.

So far its 128, 300,000 votes counted. Biden winning popular vote by 1.8M.

I think Clinton won the popular vote by 2%

I saw more than 100million had voted before election day, meaning almost 40% of eligible voters already before election day. The last election, total turnout was around 55%…so there is a chance its definitely higher than the last one.

Yeah, much what I assumed. We here view their turnout in every election as on the low side for good legitimacy and a clear mandate so my remark concerning those who did not bother to vote stands. In this I am a bit inflexible I guess.

I think in the 20th century, none of the elections had more than 70% turnout.

Yeah, which means it is on the low side in general. So very many who does not vote. Millions in fact.

My company sold all their US Treasury on Friday - as many did seem to do today. The interpretation was that Biden was expected to win, but I can say unequivocally we sold because of uncertainty. T-bills just cannot be seen as the zero base for risk. The interesting question will be where there those reserves are held, but I cannot imagine them ever being held in USD at the levels they were just last week.

I heard China have been selling theirs off too.

yes in the last election in 2016, it was one of the higher turnouts in recent times and still almost 120 mil did not vote.

Yeah, they would not have trumpeted it, but yields collapsed this afternoon. Someone was selling.
