His closest enablers, scared shitless of where this is going for them all, are trying to persuade him from the worst impulses to save their own skin. It’s not working very well for that lot, which is good.

What do you mean by this? Immigrant xenophobic toward other immigrants? Is it more of a regional/geographic thing than a race thing? What part of the United States do you live? I am in Pennsylvania, near Philadelphia, for work until March then I will be returning to Berlin. As an aside, I cannot wait to return home. My impression so far is Philly is richly diverse and everyone seems to be fighting the good fight together. Although I’ve been told/warned of certain neighborhoods to not travel through unless accompanied by someone from the area.
I’ve traveled the world over, and there will always be insular pockets, not sure how you can label that an “American thing”. For example, growing up we didn’t worry, or even care, what the other side of Berlin was doing.
